Overview

oSIST prEN IEC 60598-2-12:2026 is the latest draft of the international standard for luminaires, specifically focusing on mains socket-outlet mounted nightlights. Developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and adopted by CLC, this standard outlines the particular safety and performance requirements for nightlights that are directly plugged into household main sockets. The revision aligns the structure and clause numbers with IEC 60598-1:2024, ensuring compatibility and harmonization across luminaire standards.

Nightlights covered under this standard provide low-level illumination, typically in domestic settings, for comfort and safety during nighttime. Due to their frequent accessibility to children and general use in bedrooms, corridors, and nurseries, mains socket-outlet mounted nightlights must adhere to rigorous construction and safety criteria.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Definitions: The standard applies to mains socket-outlet mounted nightlights for use on AC supply voltages not exceeding 250 V at 50/60 Hz. It does not cover surveillance lighting.
  • Product Classification: Nightlights are classified as ordinary luminaires suitable for direct mounting on normally flammable surfaces.
  • Marking and Identification: Requirements ensure that product information, safety labels, and identification markings are clear, durable, and meet regulatory standards.
  • Construction Requirements: Covers the mechanical integrity of plug portions, mandatory safety measures to prevent access to hazardous parts, and features to prevent covers being mistaken for toys.
  • Electrical Safety: Stipulates requirements for electrical connections, plug-pins, and insulation. Ensures protective measures against electric shock, fire risks, and excessive heating.
  • Thermal Endurance and Testing: Specifies testing for normal and abnormal operation, including cover retention, temperature limits for accessible parts, resistance to fire and tracking, and correct performance under fault conditions.
  • Compatibility with Other Components: Addresses scenarios where nightlights may be combined with socket outlets or use specific light sources like electroluminescent panels.

Applications

oSIST prEN IEC 60598-2-12:2026 is essential for a variety of stakeholders in the lighting industry:

  • Manufacturers: Ensures design, production, and conformity assessment for nightlights meet strict safety and quality benchmarks, facilitating access to global markets.
  • Compliance Testing Laboratories: Provides a framework for standardized product evaluation and certification based on harmonized criteria.
  • Retailers and Distributors: Outlines requirements that assist in sourcing compliant products and reducing liability related to substandard or unsafe products.
  • Regulatory Authorities: Offers a reference for market surveillance and enforcement of electrical safety regulations for consumer luminaires.

The standard enhances user safety, especially in households with children, by defining measures to prevent accidental access to live parts and reducing risks of fire or electric shock. By aligning with IEC 60598-1:2024, designers and manufacturers benefit from a consistent and up-to-date approach for all luminaire categories.

Related Standards

Several other international standards are referenced within oSIST prEN IEC 60598-2-12:2026, ensuring comprehensive coverage of electrical and safety aspects:

  • IEC 60598-1:2024 - General requirements and tests for luminaires
  • IEC 60884-1 - General requirements for plugs and socket-outlets for household use
  • IEC 60884-2-5 - Particular requirements for socket-outlet adaptors

36 FOREWORD
37 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising all national
38 electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international co-operation on all
39 questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and in addition to other activities, IEC
40 publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and
41 Guides (hereafter referred to as "IEC Publication(s)"). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC
42 National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental
43 and non-governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with
44 the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between
45 the two organizations.
46 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international consensus
47 of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all interested IEC National
48 Committees.
49 3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National Committees in
50 that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC Publications is accurate, IEC
51 cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any misinterpretation by any end user.
52 4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications transparently to
53 the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between any IEC Publication and
54 the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
55 5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity assessment
56 services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any services carried out by
57 independent certification bodies.
58 6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
59 7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and members of its
60 technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or other damage of any nature
61 whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and expenses arising out of the publication, use of,
62 or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC Publications.

64 for the correct application of this publication.
65 9) IEC draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use of (a) patent(s). IEC
66 takes no position concerning the evidence, validity or applicability of any claimed patent rights in respect thereof. As of the
67 date of publication of this document, IEC had not received notice of (a) patent(s), which may be required to implement this
68 document. However, implementers are cautioned that this may not represent the latest information, which may be obtained
