Overview

prEN IEC 60598-2-18:2025 (IEC 60598-2-18 Ed.4) is the Part 2-18 particular requirements document for luminaires for swimming pools and similar applications. It complements IEC 60598-1 and specifies safety, construction and testing requirements for fixed luminaires intended to be used in contact with water (e.g., swimming pools, fountains, paddling and garden pools). The document aligns the structure with IEC 60598-1 (Edition 10, 2024) and is intended for parallel CENELEC voting.

• Scope: Applies to fixed luminaires used in water or in direct contact with water; excludes luminaires not in contact with water (e.g., behind separate glass) and portable/hand-held luminaires.
• Protection against electric shock: Luminaires shall be Class III, with external and internal circuits operating at ≤ 12 V AC or ≤ 30 V DC ripple free.
• Ingress protection:
  • Parts in contact with water: pressure watertight (IPX8).
  • Parts not in contact with water: at least IP54 (dustproof and splashproof).
• Mounting / service classification:
  • Category A: mounted partly in contact with water; supply and lamp replacement from non-water side.
  • Category B: lamp replacement from water side after partial/complete drainage.
  • Category C: completely removed from water for lamp replacement.
• Marking and documentation:
  • Luminaires intended only for use immersed: “For use only when immersed in water”.
  • Output of controlgear or transformer (W or VA) must be provided on the luminaire or in the installation leaflet.
  • Installation leaflet must include corrosion guidance (e.g., aluminium vs. concrete) and consider IEC 60364-7-702.
• Construction and tests:
  • Mechanical impact: parts in contact with water must withstand an impact energy of 0.7 J (0.7 Nm) in the direction of water pressure.
  • Corrosion: parts in contact with water immersed in artificial sea water at (25 ± 2) °C for 14 days; no significant corrosion or roughening (removable traces ignored).
  • Sequence and type testing aligned with Part 1; Annex AAA lists amended subclauses to check for retesting needs.

• Design, manufacture and certification of pool and fountain lighting, underwater LED fixtures, recessed in-pool luminaires and similar wet-environment luminaires.
• Ensures safe pool lighting installations, preventing electric shock, ingress, corrosion and mechanical failure.

39 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
