kSIST FprEN IEC 60598-2-2:2026 is a SIST standard for recessed luminaires and recessed air-handling luminaires. It sets particular safety, marking, construction and test requirements for luminaires used in ceilings, ventilation ducts or ventilated spaces, for electric light sources and supply voltages up to 1 000 V. It is used together with IEC 60598-1.

What does kSIST FprEN IEC 60598-2-2:2026 specify?

kSIST FprEN IEC 60598-2-2:2026 specifies the particular requirements for recessed luminaires and recessed air-handling luminaires. The document is organized as clauses 1 to 17, followed by annexes AAA to AAD.

It covers the safety-related topics that matter for installation and product assessment:

  • scope and reference standards
  • terms and definitions
  • general test requirements and the order of clauses
  • classification and marking
  • construction, wiring and earthing
  • protection against electric shock
  • resistance to dust, solid objects and moisture
  • insulation, creepage distances and clearances
  • endurance, thermal, heat, fire and tracking tests
  • screw terminals and screwless terminals

What are the key requirements of kSIST FprEN IEC 60598-2-2:2026?

kSIST FprEN IEC 60598-2-2:2026 focuses on how recessed luminaires are identified, installed and tested so that their declared safety limits match real ceiling conditions. The most important requirements are in marking, wiring, electric shock protection and thermal testing.

Marking and identification

Clause 6 requires recessed luminaires with two IP ratings to mark both ratings clearly and durably. The markings have to remain visible during installation, and it must be clear which parts each rating refers to.

Where relevant, the luminaire also has to carry the symbol for not being suitable for direct mounting on normally flammable surfaces, or the symbol for not being suitable for covering with thermal insulating material. In practice, this tells the installer whether the luminaire may touch a combustible mounting surface or be buried under insulation.

Wiring, earthing and electric shock protection

Clause 8 requires flexible cables or cords supplied by the manufacturer to meet the mechanical and electrical expectations of the IEC 60227 series or IEC 60245 series and to withstand the highest temperature they may see in use. Clause 10 requires parts in the ceiling cavity to give the same protection against electric shock as the visible parts below the ceiling.

For the reader, this means the wiring method and access barriers inside the ceiling are part of the safety case, not just the visible luminaire body.

Dust, moisture and thermal performance

Clause 11 requires recessed luminaires to be tested according to the IP classification stated for the part in the recess and the part that protrudes from it. Clause 14 then requires thermal testing in the test recess defined in Annex AAB.

The document also checks that any supply cable exposed to heat stays within the limits in Table 1, and it gives special thermal test conditions for air-handling luminaires. For those luminaires, testing is done under static operation, with defined temperature limits for air paths and light-source surfaces.

Installation-dependent testing

Annex AAA gives a method for measuring ambient temperature in an actual installation. This helps the user judge whether the luminaire's t rating is suitable for the cavity or ceiling space in question.

Annex AAB adds the test recess arrangements for luminaires suitable or not suitable for covering with thermal insulating material, including separate enclosures, wall-mounted variants and settable or adjustable luminaires. Annex AAC explains how t_a is interpreted for air-handling luminaires.

What terms does kSIST FprEN IEC 60598-2-2:2026 define?

  • air-handling luminaire - A luminaire specially designed to work with an air conditioning system, with air passing through the lamp chamber or separate passages.
  • static operation - Operation when the luminaire is not moving forced supply or extract air, but still allows natural convection.
  • rated maximum ambient temperature (t) - The maximum ambient temperature associated with normal conditions for the luminaire and used for marking and installation checks.
  • IP classification - The degree of protection against dust, solid objects and moisture, applied here to parts in the recess and parts protruding from it.

Who uses kSIST FprEN IEC 60598-2-2:2026?

kSIST FprEN IEC 60598-2-2:2026 is used by luminaire manufacturers, lighting engineers, test laboratories, certification bodies and electrical installers. It is also relevant to specifiers and buyers who need recessed products for ceilings, cavities, ducted spaces or air-handling applications.

In practice, these users apply it to product design, type testing, marking review, installation checks and conformity assessment. It is especially relevant where the luminaire interacts with ceiling insulation, flammable mounting surfaces or ventilation systems.

What changed in kSIST FprEN IEC 60598-2-2:2026 from the previous edition?

kSIST FprEN IEC 60598-2-2:2026 replaces the fourth edition published in 2023. The document states that this fifth edition is a technical revision, and its significant technical change is alignment of clause numbers and structure with IEC 60598-1.

Annex AAD states that no requirements are considered more onerous than in the previous edition.

Which standards are used with kSIST FprEN IEC 60598-2-2:2026?

  • IEC 60598-1 - The main companion standard; Part 2-2 is used together with the latest edition and its amendments.
  • IEC 60227 (all parts) - Provides the reference basis for PVC-insulated cables up to 450/750 V.
  • IEC 60245 (all parts) - Provides the reference basis for rubber-insulated cables up to 450/750 V.

What does the kSIST FprEN IEC 60598-2-2:2026 document contain?

The document contains the full clause structure for recessed luminaires, including marking, construction, wiring, earthing, protection against electric shock, IP-related testing, thermal endurance, heat and fire resistance, and terminal requirements. It also includes figures for the marking symbols and for test recess examples used in thermal assessment.

Annex AAB provides the main thermal test setups and examples for luminaires with separate parts, while Table 1 sets the cable temperature checks used during testing. Annex AAA and Annex AAC support installation-dependent temperature assessment, and Annex AAD lists amended subclauses linked to retesting decisions.
