Footwear manufacturing wastes - Waste classification and management

This document specifies the process steps which are involved in the generation of the waste from footwear manufacture and the usual waste management practices. It also establishes a European list of the usual wastes generated during the footwear manufacturing process.
It can be applied to one specific product, a specific group of products, one specific production technology within the factory or to the whole production of a company.
NOTE   The nature of such wastes produced will depend on manufacturing processes, the type of shoe and the materials used.
The tool used to evaluate the effectiveness of the waste management is:
-   established directly from the production process or waste generated,
-   calculated for a specific product, a specific group of products or a specific production technology which shall be defined or the whole production of the company.

¾   créé directement à partir du procédé de fabrication ou du type de déchet produit ;

Overview

EN 12940:2004 - published by CEN - defines a structured approach to footwear manufacturing wastes, including a European waste classification list and recommended waste management practices for the footwear industry. The standard covers process steps that generate waste, methods to quantify and report waste, and a practical evaluation tool to measure the effectiveness of waste management. It applies at different scales: a single product, a product group, a specific production technology or the whole factory.

Key topics and requirements

  • Process mapping: Identify manufacturing steps that create waste (storage, cutting, upper manufacture, sole/heel preparation, assembly, finishing, maintenance).
  • Waste classification list: Provides typical waste types for footwear production (e.g., upper/insole/sole cutting waste, trimmings, solvent residues, sub‑standard shoes, packaging wastes such as 150101 cardboard shoe boxes).
  • Waste management practices: Standard codes common practices - A reuse, B recycle, C incineration with energy recovery, D special destruction, E controlled landfill, F incineration without energy recovery, G other (specify).
  • Quantification method: Convert all waste (solid and liquid) to kilograms and express results as kg/1 000 pairs produced. Test period up to 12 months.
  • Reporting and transparency: Produce a test report that documents the test period, scope (product/technology/company), average pair mass, process steps considered, quantification methods and results (tabulated by waste code and management practice).
  • Compliance context: Aligns with EU waste-related directives and can be used alongside EN ISO 14001 environmental management systems.

Practical applications

  • Footwear manufacturers can use EN 12940:2004 to:
    • Establish baseline waste generation by process or product (useful for waste reduction targets).
    • Track and optimize waste management practices (increase reuse/recycling, reduce landfilling).
    • Prepare documented waste reports for environmental audits, ISO 14001 implementation, regulatory compliance, and sustainability reporting.
  • Environmental health & safety (EHS) managers, sustainability officers, production engineers and external consultants use the standard to design waste minimization programs and to calculate waste indicators (kg/1 000 pairs) for benchmarking.

Related standards and references

  • EN ISO 14001:1996 - Environmental management systems (useful for integrating waste management into an EMS).
  • Relevant EU directives cited in EN 12940:2004 - e.g., waste, hazardous waste, packaging waste and landfill legislation (refer to the standard’s bibliography for exact references).

EN 12940:2004 offers a practical, industry‑specific framework for classifying, measuring and improving waste management in footwear production, helping manufacturers reduce costs, meet regulatory requirements and improve sustainability performance.
