This document specifies requirements for the ventilation of petrol engine and petrol tank compartments in small craft having petrol engines for propulsion, electrical generation or mechanical power, to prevent the accumulation of explosive gases in these compartments. Personal watercraft are not covered in this document.

Overview

EN ISO 11105:2020 (ISO 11105:2020) is the international / CEN-adopted standard that specifies safety requirements for the ventilation of petrol engine and petrol tank compartments in small craft (recreational boats and similar watercraft up to 24 m hull length). The standard aims to prevent accumulation of explosive petrol vapours by defining ventilation system types, sizing, installation and operational requirements. Personal watercraft are excluded from this document.

The standard covers both natural and powered ventilation systems and sets measurable installation rules. Important technical points include:

• Ventilation types
  • Natural ventilation is required for petrol tank compartments (unless remaining volume < 3 L).
  • Both natural and powered ventilation are required for petrol engine compartments.
• Duct sizing and airflow
  • Ventilation ducting and airflow shall be calculated using net compartment volume.
  • Minimum internal cross-sectional areas specified: petrol tank compartments - 1 134 mm²; petrol engine compartments - 3 161 mm².
  • Terminal fittings for flexible ducts must have at least 80% of the required duct cross-sectional area.
• Installation and layout
  • Ducts must be self-draining and terminate on the exterior of the craft and outside weather enclosures.
  • Ventilation intakes and exhausts shall be located per ISO 10088:2013 and be separated to minimize recirculation (barriers required if mounted side-by-side).
  • Ventilation openings must not discharge directly into habitable spaces.
• Compartment integrity and safety
  • Compartments with engines/tanks must be separated from habitable spaces with continuously sealed boundaries, sealed penetrations, and secure access fittings.
  • Only ignition-protected equipment (per ISO 8846:1990) may be installed in petrol compartments.
• Documentation
  • Requirements for the owner’s manual and blower rating determination (Annex A) are included.

This European Standard has been prepared under a Commission’s standardization request
M/542/C(2015) 8736 final to provide one voluntary means of conforming to essential requirements of
Directive 2013/53/EU.
Once this standard is cited in the Official Journal of the European Union under that Directive,
compliance with the normative clauses of this standard given in Table ZA.1 confers, within the limits of
the scope of this standard, a presumption of conformity with the corresponding essential requirements
of that Directive, and associated EFTA regulations.
