Helmets for firefighters

This European standard specifies the principal characteristics required for a helmet for firefighters with regards to the level of protection, comfort and durability. It allows options to take account of particular national requirements.  Helmets complying with this standard are not necessarily intended for special applications (for example: oil fires, forest fires).  Annex A and figures 1 to 9 are integral parts of this standard.

Diese Norm legt die wesentlichen Anforderungen an einen Feuerwehrhelm bezüglich Schutzgrad, Komfort und Lebensdauer fest. Optionen, die spezielle nationale Anforderungen berücksichtigen, sind zulässig. Diese Norm ist nicht zwangsläufig für spezielle Anforderungen (z.B. Ölbrände, Waldbrände, usw.) vorgesehen. Anhang A und Bilder 1 bis 9 sind integrale Bestandteile dieser Norm.

La présente norme spécifie les principales caractéristiques requises pour un casque des services d'incendie et de secours, elle prend en compte le niveau de protection, le confort et la tenue dans le temps du casque. Elle autorise des options pour prendre en compte des exigences nationales particulieres. Les casques conformes a cette norme ne sont pas destinés nécessairement a des applications spécifiques (par exemple: feu d'hydrocarbures, feu de forets). EN 14458:2018

This European Standard specifies the minimum requirements for visors designed specifically to be used only with protective helmets, including but not limited to those conforming to EN 443, EN 14052, EN 16471 and EN 16473 as the situation dictates. Visors for sporting use, those with corrective effect, and goggles used with a protective helmet are not covered by this standard.

This standard specifies minimum safety requirements and test methods for a firehood to be worn during firefighting operations and associated activities. EN 16473:2014

This European Standard specifies the minimum requirements for technical rescue helmets. These helmets are intended to protect the upper head mainly against the effects of mechanical hazards such as impact and penetration, flame, electrical and chemical hazards whilst conducting technical rescue and associated activities.
Technical rescues involves work associated with the environments and conditions associated with operational scenarios such as but not limited to those found during road traffic collisions and when working in and around collapsed structures often for extended periods of time after natural disasters (flood, earthquake, etc.)
Requirements for marking and information to be supplied by the manufacturer are included.
Helmets for use whilst firefighting in buildings and other structures or in wildland firefighting environments, are not covered by this European Standard, see EN 443 and EN 16471.
Helmets for use in water rescue operations using craft are also not covered by this European Standard.
Protection of the face, eyes, ears and neck may require additional items of PPE, which are not covered by this European Standard.

EN 16471:2014

This European Standard specifies the minimum requirements for wildland fire fighting helmets protecting the upper head mainly against the effects of impact, penetration, heat, flame and burning embers whilst conducting fire fighting and associated activities in wildland environments. Requirements for marking and information to be supplied by the manufacturer are included. Wildland fire fighting involves direct and indirect attack techniques (like wood cutting). This helmet is not intended to provide protection during fire entrapment.
Wildland environments include forests, crops, plantations and grass/heath/scrub or farmland.
Helmets for use whilst fire fighting in buildings and other structures are not covered by this European Standard (see EN 443).
Protection of the face, eyes, ears and neck may require additional items of PPE, which are not covered by this European Standard.

Helmets for fire fighting in buildings and other structures
EN 443:2008

The purpose of this European Standard is to provide essential performance requirements for protective helmets for Firefighters whilst firefighting in buildings and other structures. The helmets in this Standard can be used for other activities subject to a Risk Assessment. This standard allows options to take account of particular national requirements.
The standard also includes guidance on selection, use, care and maintenance in an informative annex. Fire fighters should be trained in the use, care and maintenance of helmets covered by this standard, including an understanding of any limitation.
The standard deals with two types of helmets: a type A and a type B. Selection of the type of helmet and any optional equipment should be made following a comprehensive risk assessment.
This standard primarily specifies minimum safety requirements for the protection of the upper head. Requirements for the protection of the lower face and the neck, where relevant, are covered by other European standards, which are referenced in this standard. However helmets incorporating means of protecting the firefighters lower face and neck are not excluded from complying with this standard.
Figures 1 to 5 are integral parts of this standard.
