Alcohol interlocks - Test methods and performance requirements - Part 2: Instruments having a mouthpiece and measuring breath alcohol for general preventive use
This European Standard specifies test methods and performance requirements for breath alcohol controlled alcohol interlocks having a mouthpiece. It covers alcohol interlocks intended for general preventive use. This European Standard is directed at test laboratories and manufacturers of alcohol interlocks. It defines requirements and test procedures for type approval. Several parameters (for example alcohol concentration or breath volume) are specified in this European Standard for the purpose of type testing according to this standard only. However, it may be necessary due to national regulations or depending on user requests to set the values of the prescribed parameters differently when the alcohol interlocks are in use. This European Standard also applies to alcohol interlocks integrated into other systems of the vehicle. This European Standard does not apply to – alcohol interlocks intended for use in traffic safety programmes for drink driving offenders (see EN 50436-1), – instruments measuring the alcohol concentration in the ambient air in the vehicle, – alcohol interlocks not having a mouthpiece, – methods of installation and connections to the vehicle.

Overview
EN 50436-2:2014 (CENELEC/CLC) defines test methods and performance requirements for alcohol interlocks that use a mouthpiece and measure breath alcohol for general preventive use. It is a type‑approval standard targeted at test laboratories and manufacturers. The document complements the main EN 50436 series by specifying differences for mouthpiece‑based breathalysers intended for broad preventive deployment (professional and private drivers), while excluding offender‑program devices covered by EN 50436-1.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope & exclusions
- Applies to breath alcohol controlled alcohol interlocks with a mouthpiece for general preventive use.
- Does not apply to offender programme devices (see EN 50436-1), ambient‑air sensors, mouthpiece‑less devices, or installation methods.
- Performance and blocking logic
- Defines blocking / not‑blocking behaviour, concentration limits and type approval test procedures.
- Includes specified test concentrations used for type testing (e.g., requirement that devices remain blocking for the test concentrations 0.75 mg/l and 1.50 mg/l).
- Data memory & security
- Data memory is optional; if present it must record events with date and time, protect against loss/corruption, enable authorised download/evaluation, and allow disabling of personal‑use data recording.
- Testing regimes
- Electrical tests (some performed at 50 °C), calibration curve verification, analytical specificity and breath sample procedures.
- Durability tests: temperature cycles (including code A: −20 °C to +65 °C for removable cabin parts), condensed water, vibrations and drop tests.
- Environmental tests covering temperature, humidity, pressure, warm‑up time and enclosure protection.
- Anti‑tampering and functionality
- Tampering/circumvention tests, retest mechanisms (optional), override functions, communication integrity and wireless communication provisions.
- Documentation
- Requirements for instructions, service intervals, calibration info and type‑test reporting.
Practical applications
- Supports type approval and product development for manufacturers of mouthpiece breath alcohol interlocks.
- Guides independent test laboratories performing conformity and durability testing.
- Aids procurers, vehicle integrators and fleet managers specifying preventive alcohol interlocks for commercial or private fleets.
- Useful for regulators and standardisation bodies harmonising performance criteria for preventive breath alcohol detection.
Who should use this standard
- Alcohol interlock manufacturers (design, QA, compliance teams)
- Accredited testing laboratories
- Vehicle OEMs and aftermarket integrators
- Procurement officers and road safety authorities
