Overview

EN 60745-2-22:2011/prAC:2012 is a CENELEC draft amendment to the European standard for the safety of hand-held motor-operated electric tools - specifically Part 2-22: particular requirements for cut-off machines. This amendment (prepared by CLC/TC 116) adds normative requirements for the measurement of inhalable and respirable dust emitted by cut-off machines and wall chasers and supplements the existing Part 1 and IEC/EN 60745 series with new clauses prefixed “Z”.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope of amendment: Introduces Annex ZC (normative) specifying dust measurement requirements for cut-off machines and wall chasers.
  • Dust measurement focus: Defines procedures to measure concentrations of inhalable dust and respirable dust, and requires reporting of mean respirable dust concentration.
  • Test procedure and operating conditions: Adds detailed operating conditions (Tables ZC.101 and ZC.102) including:
    • Concrete slab test pieces: typical dimensions 400×400 mm up to 600×600 mm, thickness (50 ± 5) mm, stored dry for ≥ 3 weeks (six weeks storage total).
    • Slot depths: rated capacity ≤ 180 mm → 20 mm; > 180 mm → 40 mm.
    • Minimum cutting lengths per test: tools ≤ 180 mm → 18.4 m total (8 cuts); tools > 180 mm → 13.8 m total (6 cuts).
    • Feed force target: set to achieve average power consumption of 70 %–90 % of rated input during the test.
    • Wall chasers: use calcium silicate blocks (density ~1 800–2 000 kg/m³), specified storage and orientation, total slot lengths (e.g., 40 m for max depth ≤ 30 mm).
  • Tool setup: Tests use new or re-sharpened diamond wheels as specified by the manufacturer; speed setting and feed settings adjusted to manufacturer recommendations.
  • Reporting and instructions: Test reports must include mean respirable dust concentration; additional instructions mirror Part 1 with the respirable dust mean requirement added.

Practical applications and users

  • Manufacturers of cut-off machines and wall chasers - to design, validate and document dust-emission performance and to meet EU safety directives.
  • Test laboratories and certification bodies - for standardized test setups, repeatable measurement procedures, and reporting requirements.
  • Product compliance engineers and safety officers - to assess worker exposure risk and to demonstrate conformity with electrotechnical safety standards.
  • Regulators and procurement teams - to specify performance and safety criteria for powered cutting equipment.

Related standards

  • EN 60745 series (Part 1 and Part 2-22:2011)
  • IEC 60745-2-22 (as referenced)
  • CENELEC / CLC/TC 116 documents on motor-operated tool safety
