Overview

EN 14701-4:2018 - Characterization of sludges: Filtration properties - Part 4 specifies a laboratory method to determine the drainability of flocculated sludge. The standard applies to sludges and sludge suspensions from stormwater, urban wastewater collection and treatment, industrial wastewater similar to urban wastewater (Directive 91/271/EEC), water-supply treatment plants and other origins. The test evaluates how readily treated (flocculated) sludge releases water by gravity filtration and supports flocculant selection, dosing and thickening optimization.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and definitions: Drainability is defined as the ability of treated sludge to separate from sludge liquor by gravity filtration; flocculation refers to coagulation with inorganic/organic polyelectrolytes.
  • Sample conditioning: Flocculation must be performed under repeatable, quantified conditions per EN 14742 or tested on pre-flocculated samples.
  • Apparatus: Typical gravity drainage cell (transparent tube ~150 mm diameter), a filtering medium matching full-scale equipment, a filtrate draining device, a beaker, and a balance (≥0.1 g accuracy) connected to software to record cumulative filtrate mass (data at least every 0.5 s).
  • Procedure: Measure initial water content; pour ~1 L flocculated sludge into the cell; record cumulative filtrate mass vs time (intensively during first 30 s); stop when filtrate mass stabilizes or after 10 min; determine cake dryness and suspended solids in filtrate (EN 15934, EN 872).
  • Results and metrics:
    • Dimensionless filtrate mass ratio at t = 30 s, 90 s and test end.
    • Reference time to collect filtrate equal to 50% of sludge water content.
    • Cake dryness and suspended solids in filtrate.
    • Drainability index (Eg) - an adimensional indicator combining sludge dryness increase, drainage kinetics (t90) and filtrate suspended solids to compare flocculants and conditions.
  • Precision: Validation trials reported average relative repeatability and reproducibility (examples: repeatability ≈4.6% at 30 s, 3.5% at 90 s; reproducibility averages similar). Annexes document apparatus, sample sizing and validation data.

Practical applications

  • Flocculant selection and dosing: Rapid lab screening to choose the best polymer and dose before full‑scale trials.
  • Process optimisation: Inform design and operation of gravity belt thickeners and other passive dewatering systems.
  • Quality control: Routine checks on sludge thickening performance and troubleshooting when drainage degrades.
  • Equipment comparison and scale-up: Use results to narrow candidates for pilot or plant-scale testing.

Who should use this standard

  • Wastewater treatment plant operators and process engineers
  • Laboratory analysts and environmental testing labs
  • Flocculant manufacturers and chemical suppliers
  • Designers and vendors of sludge dewatering equipment
  • Consultants and researchers in wastewater treatment
