Overview

EN 80416-2:2001 (ISO 80416-2:2001) specifies the basic principles, proportions and permitted forms of graphical arrows used on equipment. Published by CENELEC/CLC and identical to ISO 80416-2, the standard defines arrow shapes as graphical symbols or symbol elements to indicate movement, force, function, speed and dimensions. It is intended to ensure consistent, legible arrow design across equipment markings, controls and technical documentation.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Rules for the form and use of arrows when creating new symbol originals or revising existing symbols; creation of symbol originals shall follow IEC 80416-1.
  • Arrow types and meanings: A reduced set of arrow forms is recommended to promote consistency. Representative types in the standard include:
    • Type 1 (60° head) - movement (basic arrow form)
    • Type 2 (40° head) - speed-related indications
    • Type 3 (84° head) - function and force
    • Type 4 (90° head) - dimensional indications
    • Note: the Belgian (special) arrow head is reserved for public information and safety (ISO 7001).
  • Proportions and drawing guidance: The standard provides proportions and graphical rules (line thickness, head angle and use) so arrows remain legible at small sizes and within symbol families.
  • Annex A (normative): Gives detailed guidance on using arrow forms for direction, nature of movement (continuous, interrupted, limited, repeated positioning), speed and dimensional use.
  • Normative references: Links to IEC 80416-1 for symbol creation and to graphical symbol databases (ISO 7000, IEC 60417).

Applications and users

Who uses EN 80416-2:2001:

  • Product designers and industrial designers creating controls and equipment markings
  • Technical illustrators and documentation authors producing manuals, schematics and decals
  • Safety engineers and signage designers applying machine/safety symbols
  • Standards committees and regulatory bodies harmonizing symbols across markets
  • Manufacturers ensuring compliance and consistent user interfaces across product lines

Practical uses:

  • Designing consistent arrow elements in control panels and user interfaces
  • Preparing technical drawings and assembly instructions with standardized movement and dimension indicators
  • Harmonizing international symbols for multilingual products to improve recognition and safety

ISO 80416-2:2001(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of ISO 80416-2 may be the subject of patent rights.
ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
In order to collect all requirements concerning basic principles for graphical symbols for use on equipment,
ISO/TC 145, Graphical symbols, and IEC/TC 3, Documentation and graphical symbols, agreed to prepare jointly all
parts of this International Standard and to publish them under the general number 80416. For each of the individual
parts of this series, only one of the two organizations is responsible. Meanwhile, the technical committees have
agreed that no modification will be made to International Standard 80416 except bymutual agreement.
International Standard ISO 80416-2 was accordingly prepared jointly by Technical Committee ISO/TC 145,
Graphical symbols, and Technical Committee IEC/TC 3, Documentation and graphical symbols. The draft was
circulated for voting to the national bodies of both ISO and IEC.
