Overview
EN 1034-7:2005+A1:2009 (CEN) specifies safety requirements for chests used in paper making. It is intended to be applied together with EN 1034-1:2000+A1:2010 and addresses significant hazards, hazardous situations and hazard events when chests are used as intended and under conditions foreseen by the manufacturer. The standard covers design and construction aspects relevant to operator protection, maintenance and safe operation. It does not apply to tanks for chemicals, storage tanks for starch and other additives, basins for waste water from the paper making process, or chests manufactured before its publication date.
Key Topics
- Scope & application: Applies to chests (vessels for storing, collecting and mixing pulp) and includes agitator, measuring/control and shutoff devices. Use EN 1034-1 in tandem for common requirements.
- Mechanical safeguards: Power transmission elements outside the chest must be enclosed per EN 953; working platforms require fall-off protection (railing height at least 1.20 m).
- Inspection holes & manholes:
- Open inspection holes must prevent falls (no gaps wider than 0.30 m or equivalent protection).
- Covers that can be opened by hand should follow ergonomic principles; covers weighing more than 200 N need lifting aids or counterweights and must be secured in the open position.
- Manholes for access/ventilation should be at least 600 mm wide and designed so they can only be opened when the chest is empty.
- Level control & overflow protection: Automatic measures (level control devices or overflow piping) are required to prevent pulp overflow; control systems must meet at least category B of EN 954-1.
- Electrical, hydraulic & pneumatic systems: Electrical equipment must comply with EN 60204-1 and related EMC standards; metal chests must be earthed. Hydraulic/pneumatic components must meet EN 982/EN 983 requirements.
- Ventilation & hazardous gases: Provisions for ventilation, openings to prevent vacuum/pressure during filling/draining, and means to remove hazardous gases are required when chest entry or exposure risk exists.
- Noise & information: Noise emission data must be provided in the instruction handbook; guidance on hearing protection is required.
Applications
EN 1034-7 is used by:
- Machine designers and OEMs of paper-making and finishing equipment for chest design and safety validation.
- Safety engineers performing risk assessments and conformity checks before placing machinery on the market.
- Maintenance and operations teams to implement correct isolation, ventilation and interlock procedures.
Practical benefits include reduced risk of entanglement, crushing, gas exposure and overflow incidents, and clearer requirements for safe access and maintenance.
