Overview
EN 16294:2012 (CEN) defines an analytical method for the determination of phosphorus content in Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAME) using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES). The standard covers direct optical emission spectral analysis of FAME samples and is intended for phosphorus concentrations in the range 2.5 mg/kg to 8.0 mg/kg. A general safety warning highlights that hazardous materials and equipment may be involved and that users must adopt appropriate safety practices.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and target analyte: Phosphorus in FAME (2.5–8.0 mg/kg).
- Analytical technique: ICP OES (optical emission spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma). Radial ICP-OES is recommended to minimize carbon-related matrix effects.
- Sample preparation: Weigh FAME, dilute with kerosene (boiling range 175–250 °C) and use oil-based stock and intermediate standards. Use plastic bottles (HDPE, FEP, PFA) to avoid contamination.
- Internal standard: Use element standards such as cobalt, scandium or yttrium to correct viscosity/matrix effects.
- Calibration: Two procedures described (A and B) that use intensity ratios or corrected intensities; calibration uses multiple standards and linear regression. Recommended P emission lines include 177.499 nm, 178.287 nm, 213.618 nm, 214.914 nm.
- Quality control: Regular calibration checks with QC samples; if QC differs by more than 20% from reference, recalibrate.
- Equipment and reagents: High-purity argon (≥ 99.996%), appropriate nebuliser and pump tubing for organic solvents, analytical balance (0.1 mg), volumetric flasks and solvent-cleaning protocols to avoid phosphorus contamination.
- Performance data: Contains precision statements (repeatability and reproducibility) and reporting requirements.
Applications and users
- Biodiesel producers and quality control labs assessing phosphorus in FAME to ensure fuel quality and protect engine and exhaust after‑treatment systems.
- Fuel testing and certification laboratories performing routine compositional analysis and regulatory compliance testing.
- Research laboratories studying feedstock impacts and refining processes that affect phosphorus levels.
- Refineries and blending facilities monitoring additives and contaminants during production and blending.
Practical benefits: accurate low-level phosphorus measurement, matrix correction via internal standards, and standardized calibration/QA procedures for consistent results across laboratories.
