Overview

EN 61305-3:1995 (IEC 1305-3:1995) - Household high-fidelity audio equipment and systems - Methods of measuring and specifying the performance - Part 3: Amplifiers. Published by CLC, this standard defines measurement methods and specification content for household high-fidelity audio amplifiers of all types and for multi‑function equipment that includes audio amplifying functions. It is intended to be read in conjunction with IEC 1305-1 (General) and references existing sound-system and digital-audio standards for test conditions.

Key topics and technical requirements

The standard lays out required measurement conditions and procedures for amplifier performance parameters, including:

  • Scope and test conditions

    • Applies to domestic hi‑fi amplifiers and multifunction units.
    • Electrical test conditions follow IEC 268-3, source values per IEC 268-15 (analogue) and IEC 958 (digital).
    • Climatic conditions referenced to IEC 1305-1.
  • Measured characteristics (methods and reporting)

    • Effective frequency range - response limits: ±1.5 dB for linear (non-equalizing) inputs, ±2 dB for equalizing inputs.
    • Gain difference between channels - worst value between 250 Hz and 6.3 kHz, across specified volume positions.
    • Total harmonic distortion (THD) - worst value from 63 Hz to 12.5 kHz, measured over defined output levels.
    • Distortion-limited effective frequency range - frequencies where THD is 3 dB below the rated distortion-limited output.
    • Rated (distortion-limited) output - measured per IEC 268-3, with guidance on sustaining times.
    • Maximum output voltage/current and overload source e.m.f.
    • Channel separation and cross-talk - specified measurement bands and worst-case reporting.
    • Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) - band-limited (unweighted) and A-weighted SNR using true RMS meters and defined filters; procedures for volume control positions (rated and -30 dB).
    • Digital-input distortion/noise - tests at FS, FS‑30 dB, FS‑60 dB signal levels.
  • Specification content

    • Comprehensive product specifications shall include, at minimum, effective frequency range, THD, rated output, channel separation, cross-talk and A-weighted SNR.

Applications and who uses it

EN 61305-3:1995 is used by:

  • Manufacturers and test engineers for product development, verification, and datasheet specification of household hi‑fi amplifiers.
  • Certification bodies and laboratories performing standardized performance testing.
  • Product managers and purchasers who need consistent, comparable technical specifications for amplifiers.
  • Integrators and audio reviewers evaluating fidelity metrics such as THD, SNR, channel separation and rated output.

FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization
comprising all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to
promote international cooperation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and
electronic fields. To this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards.
Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in
the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and
non-governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC
collaborates closely with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with
conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters, prepared by technical committees on
which all the National Committees having a special interest therein are represented, express, as nearly as
possible, an international consensus of opinion on the subjects dealt with.
3) They have the form of recommendations for international use published in the form of standards, technical
reports or guides and they are accepted by the National Committees in that sense.
4) In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International
Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly
indicated in the latter.
