This document (prEN 1001:2020) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 38 “Durability of
wood and wood-based products”, the secretariat of which is held by AFNOR.
This document is currently submitted to the CEN Enquiry.
This document superseeds EN 1001-1:2005 and EN 1001-2:2005.
The following main changes have been made compared to the previous edition:
— switch from multilingual to monolingual document;
— merging of parts 1 and 2 of the old edition;
— inclusion of several new definitions;
— update of several already existing definitions;
— modification of the categorisation of the terms.
Introduction
The terms and definitions presented in this document have been selected as terms frequently used in the
specific suite of existing standards produced by the Technical Committee CEN/TC38 ‘Durability of wood
and wood based products’ and needing equivalences in order to clarify the operation of these standards.
The list is not intended to be exhaustive and it is not a dictionary.
The terms and their equivalences in this list have been selected and decided by the CEN/TC 38 experts in
drafting the documents from which the terms have been drawn, and in operating the biological and
chemical methods on wood preservatives and wood durability to which they relate. The list establishes
the preferred terms and their equivalences for the CEN/TC 38 series of standards at the time of its
drafting. It provides the basis for ensuring that the terminology adopted in the revision of existing
standards and in the drafting of future standards in the CEN/TC 38 series is harmonised and consistent.
Some terms and their definitions can differ from those preferred and designated in other European
Standards or standards at a national level.
Terms are listed alphabetically in the trilingual index and are referred to by numbers, which are found
against terms in the body of the vocabulary. There they are arranged in alphabetical order.

This document provides the basis for selecting the preferred equivalent terms for the drafting of future
European standards and other documents on natural or conferred durability of wood and wood based
products.
2 Normative references
There are no normative references in this document.
3 General principles
For the purpose of abbreviation in this document, the convention of using low case letters has been
adopted, except for those specific abbreviations where capital letters have been widely adopted and used
in the documents covering the durability of wood and wood-based products. In addition, the convention
adopted for abbreviation in this document is not to use full stop punctuation marks between letters.
