Overview

EN ISO 10321:2008 - Geosynthetics - Tensile test for joints/seams by wide‑width strip method (ISO 10321:2008) defines an index laboratory method to measure the tensile properties of joints and seams in geosynthetics using a wide‑width strip specimen. The standard applies to most geosynthetics (including geogrids with modified specimen dimensions) but excludes polymeric or bituminous geosynthetic barriers. Results quantify joint/seam tensile strength and allow calculation of joint or seam efficiency versus the unjointed material (referencing ISO 10319).

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Specimen geometry: nominal specimen width 200 mm; initial jaw separation = 100 mm + seam/joint width; 25 mm extensions either side of the seam for stability.
  • Number of tests: cut and test at least five specimens (plus five additional if wet testing required).
  • Conditioning:
    • Standard atmosphere per ISO 554: 20 °C ± 2 °C and 65 % RH ± 5 % RH.
    • Wet conditioning: immersion in water at 20 °C ± 2 °C for at least 24 hours; up to 0.05 % non‑ionic wetting agent permitted.
  • Test machine and clamps:
    • Constant rate of extension tensile machine complying with ISO 7500‑1, Class 2 or higher.
    • Jaw faces at least 200 mm wide; use wedge jaws, compressive block jaws or capstan grips to limit slippage and damage.
  • Test parameters:
    • Strain rate that produces (20 ± 5) %/min in gauge length.
    • Record maximum force to 0.01 kN accuracy.
  • Results & reporting:
    • Report maximum joint/seam strength (kN/m), failure mode (material break, sewing thread break, joint failure, slippage, etc.), and joint/seam efficiency (%) relative to tensile strength from ISO 10319.
    • Include conditioning details, specimen orientation and failure observations.

Applications and users

EN ISO 10321:2008 is used for:

  • Product performance verification by manufacturers of geotextiles, geogrids and sewn or welded geosynthetics.
  • Independent testing laboratories performing QA/QC and type testing.
  • Designers, specifiers and contractors needing reliable joint/seam strength data for containment, drainage, reinforcement and lining systems.
  • Regulatory bodies and project engineers requiring documented seam performance for safety and compliance.

Practical benefits: enables comparison of seam methods (sewing, welding, mechanical joints), informs construction tolerances, and supports specification of joint efficiency in design.

ISO 10321:2008(E) iv © ISO 2008 – All rights reserved Foreword ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization. International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2. The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote. Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights. ISO 10321 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 221, Geosynthetics. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 13021:1992), which has been technically revised.

INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ISO 10321:2008(E) © ISO 2008 – All rights reserved 1Geosynthetics — Tensile test for joints/seams by wide-width strip method 1 Scope This International Standard specifies an index test method for determination of the tensile properties of joints and seams in geosynthetics, using a wide-width strip. The method is applicable to most geosynthetics. It is also applicable to geogrids, but the specimen dimensions may need to be altered. This test is not applicable to polymeric or bituminous geosynthetic barriers. This method quantifies the tensile strength of a joint or seam between geosynthetics. It can provide data to indicate the joint or seam tensile strength which can be achieved. A joint or seam efficiency can be calculated by comparison of the joint/seam tensile strength with the tensile strength of the unjointed material, as determined by ISO 10319. Procedures for measuring the tensile properties of both conditioned and wet specimens are included. Some modification of techniques may be necessary for particular geosynthetics, e.g. strong geosynthetics, meshes or geosynthetics made from glass fibre, to prevent them from slipping in the jaws or being damaged as a result of being gripped in the jaws. The basic test for joints or seams in all kinds of geosynthetics uses test specimens of 200 mm width, with the provision for the seam or joint to extend for 25 mm on each side, in order to provide joint or seam stability during the test (see Figure 1).
