SIST EN 4500-001:2026 is the Slovenian standard for the general rules used to draft and present metallic material standards for aerospace applications. It sets the common framework for the EN 4500 series, so the same kind of material standard is written in a consistent way across aerospace metals.

What does SIST EN 4500-001:2026 specify?

SIST EN 4500-001:2026 specifies the general drafting and presentation rules for European standards on aerospace metallic materials. Its role is procedural rather than material-specific: it tells authors how to structure a material standard, what to put in the title and scope, and how to complete the main requirements table.

The document is organized into four clauses plus two normative annexes:

PartWhat it covers
Clause 1Scope of the EN 4500 series and of Part 001
Clause 2Normative references used in the drafting rules
Clause 3Terms and definitions used for this series
Clause 4Detailed rules for drafting a European standard for aerospace metallic materials
Annex ANormative template for Table 1
Annex BNormative allocation of line numbers to optional lines

Clause 4 is the core of the document. It explains how a material standard is structured, how line-by-line requirements are written, and how mandatory and optional content is handled in the template. That matters in practice because the standard is meant to keep aerospace material standards aligned, comparable, and easy to apply by manufacturers and purchasers.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 4500-001:2026?

SIST EN 4500-001:2026 requires authors to use a fixed structure: title, introduction, scope, normative references, terms and definitions, requirements, bibliography if needed, and annexes if needed. In practice, this makes every material standard in the series easier to read and compare.

Title, scope, and references

The title has to identify the semi-finished product unambiguously and must not be reused for different material standards. It also sets the order of information to be shown, such as material family, designation, form, production method, limiting dimensions, and relevant property limits. For a buyer or engineer, this means the title itself should tell them whether the standard matches the product they need.

The scope clause repeats the title information and adds that the standard is for aerospace applications. Clause 4.5 also gives the exact wording for normative references, so the same rules are used every time a referenced document is made mandatory.

Table 1 and the template in Annex A

Clause 4.7 says Table 1 is normative and the listed documents are requirements, not just information. Table 1 always includes mandatory lines 1 to 26 and lines 95, 96, 98, 99 and 100; lines 27 to 94 are optional. This matters because the template is the place where the material-specific requirements are built into the standard.

Annex A provides the template for that table. If a line is not used, an em dash is entered. If there is not enough space, notes or repeated lines are used. The document also says that symbols and units must follow the ISO 80000 series.

Material identity, composition, and processing

Line 1 identifies the material family and conventional designation. Line 2 gives chemical composition, with chemical symbols, minimum and maximum values, and the way base metal or other elements are shown. That is important because aerospace material control depends on exact alloy identity and composition limits.

Lines 3 to 7 cover melting method, form, production method, further intended processing, technical specification, dimensional standard, delivery condition, delivery condition code, and use condition. The document distinguishes between delivery condition and use condition, which helps prevent confusion between the state in which material is delivered and the state expected in use or after further working.

Test samples, test pieces, and heat treatment

Lines 8.1 to 8.3 control how test samples and test pieces are prepared and heat treated. The standard gives several acceptable ways to identify the sample source, the machining state, and the heat treatment condition, including reference to line 29 when a reference heat treatment is used. In practice, this is the part that makes test results traceable to the product condition they are meant to represent.

Line 9 links the requirements to the relevant dimensions, and line 11 states the test piece direction relative to the product. That is especially important for rolled, forged, or directional products, where properties can vary with orientation.

Mechanical and special property lines

Lines 12 to 20 cover tensile properties, hardness, shear strength, bending, and impact strength. The document identifies how proof stress, tensile strength, elongation, hardness scales, bending data, and impact test type are to be entered. This lets the standard writer state exactly which property is required and how it is measured.

Lines 21 to 26 cover creep and creep rupture requirements. These lines let the standard specify temperature, time, stress, elongation, rupture stress, and elongation at rupture. That is the section used when the material has to perform under sustained load at elevated temperature.

Optional lines and qualification

Lines 30 to 94 are available for optional characteristics, and Annex B assigns line numbers to many of them, such as microstructure, grain size, fatigue, corrosion, porosity, magnetic permeability, weldability, and other special characteristics. If a needed characteristic is not listed, the document says a line number shall be requested from the ASD-STAN Metallic Materials Domain. This gives authors a controlled way to add extra requirements without breaking the template.

Lines 95 and 96 cover marking inspection and dimensional inspection. Line 100 covers product qualification, and it distinguishes between semi-finished products in general and castings or forgings. For users, this is the section that ties the standard to qualification planning and acceptance documentation.

What terms does SIST EN 4500-001:2026 define?

SIST EN 4500-001:2026 uses the general terminology from EN 4258 and EN 4259. The following terms are central to applying the document correctly:

  • Material designation - the conventional name used to identify the metallic material family and specific material.
  • Delivery condition - the thermo-mechanical state in which the semi-finished product is supplied.
  • Use condition - the heat treatment condition relevant to the semi-finished product before further working, or to the final component when no further working is intended.
  • Reference heat treatment - the specified heat treatment used when line 8.3 refers to line 29.
  • Technical specification - the governing specification that may already contain test, qualification, or acceptance requirements.
  • Dimensional standard - the standard that defines dimensional requirements for the product form.
  • Qualification programme - the agreed programme used to establish product qualification when line 100 is completed.

Who uses SIST EN 4500-001:2026?

SIST EN 4500-001:2026 is used by standards writers, aerospace materials engineers, quality managers, suppliers of semi-finished metallic products, and purchasers who need to specify aerospace material standards. It is also relevant to laboratories and qualification teams that prepare or check the test and acceptance sections of a material standard.

In practice, it supports the drafting of standards for aluminium, magnesium, heat-resisting alloys, titanium, steels, and filler metals covered by the EN 4500 series. That makes it a reference for anyone who has to write, review, or apply an aerospace metallic material standard in a controlled format.

What changed in SIST EN 4500-001:2026 from the previous edition?

SIST EN 4500-001:2026 replaces EN 4500-001:2024. The foreword states these technical changes:

  • Table 1 was made monolingual by removing the French and German columns.
  • Line 4.3, “Further intended processing”, and line 5.2, “Dimensional standard”, were added to the body of the document and Annex A.
  • Introductory sentences were added to Table 1 to make clear that it is normative and that all documents listed in it are requirements.
  • Titles were added to Table 1, Table 2, and Figure 1.
  • The document was restructured and the template was simplified to create one continuous table.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 4500-001:2026?

SIST EN 4500-001:2026 uses these referenced and companion standards:

  • EN 2002-001 - gives the tensile testing method at ambient temperature, used when tensile properties are specified.
  • EN 2032-2 - provides coding for metallurgical condition in delivery condition, used for lines 6.1 and 6.2.
  • EN 4258 - gives the general organization of aerospace metallic materials standardization and the terminology basis for the series.
  • EN 4259 - defines general terms used across the aerospace metallic materials standards.
  • EN 4500-002 to EN 4500-006 - provide the specific drafting rules for aluminium and magnesium alloys, heat-resisting alloys, titanium and titanium alloys, steels, and filler metals for brazing.
  • ISO 80000-1, -2, -3, -4, -5, -10 - provide the quantity and unit conventions used for symbols and units in the template.
  • EN 2043 - is the general requirements reference used for semi-finished product qualification in line 100 when applicable.
  • ASTM E399 - is cited for additional test directions for Charpy impact testing.
  • CEN/CENELEC Internal Regulations - Part 3 - provide the drafting principles for European standards.

What does the SIST EN 4500-001:2026 document contain?

SIST EN 4500-001:2026 contains a full normative template for a material standard, including a single continuous Table 1 in Annex A and the numbering scheme for optional lines in Annex B. It also includes the detailed instructions for completing lines covering composition, melting, form, production, dimensions, delivery condition, test samples, test pieces, tensile properties, hardness, impact, creep, marking, dimensional inspection, notes, typical use, and product qualification.

The document also contains a table of direction symbols, guidance for how to complete optional lines, and a reference heat treatment mechanism. Together, these parts support drafting, review, and qualification of aerospace metallic material standards without reproducing the material requirements themselves.
