IS 01 Interpretation on subclause 6.1
IEC 60598-2-6 : 1994 Second edition
Luminaires – Part 2 : Particular requirements
Luminaires with built-in transformers for filament lamps
INTERPRETATION SHEET
The following interpretation was agreed at the Bled meeting of IEC/SC 34D WG LUMEX held in
April 1996.
The use of SELV transformers is not excluded from this standard. Alternatively, transformers
with basic insulation can be used as long as supplementary insulation is used in the circuitry
connected to the secondary circuit of the transformer/convertor, i.e two lines of defence are
employed.

Part 2: Particular requirements -
Section 6: Luminaires with built-in transformers
for filament lamps
FOREWORD
The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization
1)
comprising all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to
promote international cooperation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and
electronic fields. To this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards.
Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in
the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and
non-governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC
collaborates closely with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with
conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters, prepared by technical committees on
which all the National Committees having a special interest therein are represented, express, as nearly as
possible, an international consensus of opinion on the subjects dealt with.
They have the form of recommendations for international use published in the form of standards, technical
3)
reports or guides and they are accepted by the National Committees in that sense.
4) In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International
Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly
indicated in the latter.
5) The IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
equipment declared to be in conformity with one of its standards.
International Standard IEC 598-2-6 has been prepared by sub-committee 34D: Luminaires,
of IEC technical committee 34: Lamps and related equipment.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1979, amendment 1
(1987) and amendment 2 (1990). This second edition constitutes a technical revision and
should be read in conjunction with IEC 598-1.
The text of this standard is based on the first edition, amendments 1 and 2 and the
following documents:
DIS Reports on voting
34D(CO)246 34D(CO)258
34D(CO)253 34D(CO)260
Full information on the voting for the approval of this standard can be found in the report
on voting indicated in the above table.
Annex A forms an integral part of this standard.

Section 6: Luminaires with built-in transformers
for filament lamps
6.1 Scope
with built-in transformers for
This section of IEC 598-2 specifies requirements for luminaire
filament lamps, with supply voltages and output voltages not exceeding:
1 000 V for class I and class li luminaires and
-
- 250 V for class 0 luminaires.
It is to be read in conjunction with those sections of IEC 598-1 to which reference is made.
This section does not apply to class Ill luminaires.
It is not necessary to use "Safety extra low voltage" (SELV) transformers to comply with
the requirements of this section. However, such transformers may satisfy the functional
requirements of this section.
6.1.1 Normative references
The following normative documents contain provisions which, through reference in this
text, constitute provisions of this section of IEC 598-2. At the time of publication, the
editions indicated were valid. All normative documents are subject to revision, and parties
to agreements based on this section of IEC 598-2 are encouraged to investigate the
possibility of applying the most recent editions of the normative documents indicated
below. Members of IEC and ISO maintain registers of currently valid International
Standards.

input winding (of the transformer): The winding which is connected to the supply.
6.3.1
output winding (of the transformer): The winding which is connected to the lamp.
6.3.2
6.3.3 nominal supply voltage (of the transformer): The supply voltage assigned to the
transformer.
NOTE — If the input winding has tappings, the transformer is considered to have more than one nominal
supply voltage.
6.3.4 nominal supply voltage range (of the transformer): The supply voltage range
assigned to the transformer expressed by its lower and upper limits.
NOTE — The nominal supply voltage range refers to a single set of terminations. A transformer with a
tapped input winding may have more than one nominal supply voltage range.
