Overview

EN 50364:2018 is a European product standard developed by CLC, specifically addressing human exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) generated by devices operating within the 0 Hz to 300 GHz frequency range. This standard focuses on equipment utilized in Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS), Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), and similar applications. It provides a comprehensive framework for evaluating such devices against limits designed to protect human health from exposure to electric, magnetic, and electromagnetic fields, as well as induced and contact currents.

Crucially, EN 50364:2018 is tailored for assessing human exposure risks and does not cover electromagnetic compatibility with other equipment or other general product safety requirements. It supports compliance with relevant European Directives and integrates with related standards such as EN 62369-1:2009 and prEN 62311:2017.

Key Topics

  • Frequency Range: Covers devices operating from static fields (0 Hz) up to millimeter waves (300 GHz).
  • Applicable Devices: Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS), RFID, and similar radio frequency-based technologies.
  • Human Exposure Limits: Defines exposure restrictions for electric, magnetic, and electromagnetic fields based on health-effect considerations, differentiated for general public and occupational workers.
  • Exposure Assessment:
    • Measurement and calculation procedures are aligned with EN 62369-1:2009.
    • Closest reasonably foreseeable human exposure distance must be justified during evaluation.
    • Addresses simultaneous exposure to multiple frequencies and the additive effects of such fields.
  • Normative References: Relies on authoritative sources including Council Recommendation 1999/519/EC for the general public and Directive 2013/35/EU for workers.
  • Compliance Evaluation: Uses exposure limits, action levels, basic restrictions, and reference levels to determine conformity.
  • Multipurpose Use Conditions: Different exposure limits apply depending on whether devices are intended for general public or exclusively for workers.
  • Assessment Uncertainty and Reporting: Emphasizes evaluation accuracy and detailed reporting in the assessment documentation.

Applications

EN 50364:2018 serves as a critical guideline for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and regulatory bodies involved with devices emitting electromagnetic fields in the retail, logistics, manufacturing, and security sectors. Typical applications include:

  • Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) Systems: Used to prevent theft, these systems emit radio frequency fields to detect tagged items.
  • Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Devices: Widely deployed for asset tracking, inventory management, and contactless identification.
  • Similar Radiofrequency Applications: Any technology utilizing RF fields within the 0 Hz to 300 GHz spectrum that could pose human exposure concerns.
  • Health and Safety Compliance: Ensures that products meet European EMF exposure limits for both consumers and workers.
  • Product Development and Certification: Helps manufacturers design safer products and facilitates conformity assessment for market access within the EU.

By following EN 50364:2018, stakeholders can effectively evaluate and control exposure risks related to electromagnetic fields, ensuring consumer safety without hampering technological innovation.

Related Standards

  • EN 62369-1:2009: Provides detailed measurement and evaluation methods for electromagnetic fields from short-range devices such as EAS and RFID.
  • prEN 62311:2017: Offers assessment procedures of electronic and electrical equipment related to human EMF exposure across 0 Hz to 300 GHz.
  • Council Recommendation 1999/519/EC: European guidelines limiting the general public's EMF exposure.
  • Directive 2013/35/EU: Covers occupational health and safety requirements for workers exposed to physical agents including electromagnetic fields.
  • Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU and Radio Equipment Directive 2014/53/EU: European regulatory frameworks that EN 50364 supports for ensuring product safety and radio equipment compliance.

exposure, time varying of transmitted power, simultaneously operated frequency bands and time averaging
as defined in normative limits.
In cases where the reasonably foreseeable exposure conditions for workers are different from the
reasonably foreseeable exposure conditions for the general public, then a separate assessment shall be
made covering those differences.

The EN 50364:2018 standard offers a crucial framework for assessing human exposure to electromagnetic fields generated by devices operating in the frequency range of 0 Hz to 300 GHz, particularly in the context of electronic article surveillance (EAS), radio frequency identification (RFID), and similar applications. One of the primary strengths of this standard is its comprehensive scope that focuses specifically on human exposure, ensuring that devices used in EAS and RFID applications are evaluated against established limits on electromagnetic fields, electric and magnetic fields, as well as induced and contact current. This singular focus allows for a detailed analysis of exposure risks, making it highly relevant for manufacturers and stakeholders concerned about health and safety compliance in their electronic products. Moreover, the EN 50364:2018 standard provides a clear route for the evaluation of electromagnetic exposure, which is essential in a market increasingly scrutinized for health implications. This specificity not only aids manufacturers in meeting regulatory requirements but also promotes consumer confidence in the safety of these technologies. Additionally, while the document primarily addresses human exposure, it clearly stipulates that it does not evaluate electromagnetic compatibility with other equipment or address product safety requirements outside the scope of electromagnetic field exposure. This clarification enhances its applicability by establishing boundaries on its use, thus guiding users towards additional standards as necessary. In summary, the EN 50364:2018 standard serves as a vital resource for ensuring that devices operating in the specified frequency range adhere to safety standards concerning human exposure to electromagnetic fields, thereby supporting both industry compliance and public health initiatives in the field of EAS and RFID technologies.
