Overview

EN 60335-2-60:2003/A2:2008 is a European standard issued by CLC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization) that focuses on the safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances, specifically targeting whirlpool baths and whirlpool spas. This amendment (A2) updates the original 2003 standard with modified or supplemental safety provisions, ensuring enhanced protection for users of these specialised bathing appliances.

The document aligns with the international IEC 60335-2-60:2002/A2:2008, reflecting a harmonized approach to electrical safety standards across Europe. It addresses unique risks linked to whirlpool systems and sets mandatory safety criteria required for compliance and national adoption by EU member countries.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application
This standard applies to electrical whirlpool baths and spas intended for household and similar use. It covers appliances that incorporate water jet systems for therapeutic and recreational purposes.

  • User Safety Focus
Addresses protection measures for vulnerable users, including children and persons with limited physical, sensory, or mental abilities, specifying the need for supervision or instructions to safely operate these appliances.

  • General and Particular Safety Requirements
Enhances guidelines on electrical insulation, waterproofing, and mechanical integrity to prevent hazards such as electric shock, overheating, or mechanical failure.

  • Temperature Control and Surface Safety
Incorporates considerations from ISO 13732-1 on hot surface ergonomics to manage the risks related to thermal contact, ensuring user comfort and protection from burns.

  • Testing and Compliance
Specifies the methods and criteria for testing individual appliance components and overall systems to confirm adherence to safety norms before market release.

  • Amendment Adoption and Implementation Dates
Requires member states to implement the amendment by May 2009, with withdrawal of conflicting national standards by August 2013.

Applications

EN 60335-2-60:2003/A2:2008 is essential for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and regulatory bodies involved with:

  • Design and Production of Whirlpool Baths and Spas
Applying strict safety measures during product development to minimize electrical and mechanical risks.

  • Product Certification and Market Approval
Ensuring whirlpool appliances meet European safety requirements to gain national and EU-wide market access.

  • Consumer Safety Assurance
Protecting users from potential hazards by enforcing compliance with tested operational and construction safety features.

  • Maintenance and Repair Guidelines
Providing frameworks to ensure ongoing appliance safety throughout its lifecycle.

Related Standards

  • IEC 60335-1 – General safety requirements for household electrical appliances, providing the base standards framework complemented by part 2-60 specific provisions.

  • ISO 13732-1 – Ergonomics of the thermal environment, focusing on human responses to hot surfaces and integrated with EN 60335-2-60 to reduce burn risks.

  • EN 60335 Series – A comprehensive suite of standards addressing safety for various household and similar electrical appliances.

Practical Value

Compliance with EN 60335-2-60:2003/A2:2008 ensures that whirlpool baths and spas are:

  • Safe for Use in Domestic Environments – Minimizing electrical and physical hazards.

  • Aligned with EU Safety Regulations – Facilitating smooth market introduction and consumer confidence.

  • Optimized for User Protection – Including special considerations for children and vulnerable individuals.

Adhering to this standard helps manufacturers reduce product liability risks and enhances consumer trust through documented safety measures specifically tailored to whirlpool bath electrical systems and controls.
