Overview

IEC 60317-68:2017 (with amendments) is the international specification for polyvinyl acetal enamelled rectangular aluminium winding wire, class 120. It defines the required properties, dimensional limits and selected test criteria for rectangular aluminium conductors coated with a single polyvinyl acetal (or polyvinyl formal) based enamel. Modified resins are permitted provided they retain the chemical identity of the original resin and meet all specified requirements. This part is part of the IEC 60317 series and is intended to be read together with IEC 60317-0-9.

Key technical topics and requirements

  • Conductor dimensions: nominal width from 2.0 mm to 16.0 mm and thickness from 0.80 mm to 5.60 mm; allowed width/thickness combinations and ratios are referenced to IEC 60317-0-9.
  • Thermal class: Class 120 - minimum temperature index 120 and minimum heat shock resistance 155 °C.
  • Grades: covers grade 1 and grade 2 for the full conductor range.
  • Coating chemistry: single-layer coating based on polyvinyl acetal / polyvinyl formal; chemical identity must be retained if modified.
  • Mechanical tests:
    • Mandrel winding (flexibility): coating must show no cracks when bent flatwise and edgewise on mandrels sized per Table 1 (generally expressed as multiples of width or thickness).
    • Adherence: wire stretched 15%; loss of adhesion distance must be less than one width.
  • Electrical tests:
    • Breakdown voltage measured with elevated temperature at 120 °C.
    • Electrical resistance, elongation and other requirements reference IEC 60317-0-9 and applicable amendments.
  • Tests marked “test inappropriate” in this part: springiness, cut-through, resistance to abrasion, continuity of insulation, resistance to refrigerants, solderability, heat/solvent bonding, dielectric dissipation factor, loss of mass, pin hole test - these are not required for this wire type in this standard.
  • Packaging: follows Clause 30 of IEC 60317-0-9.

Practical applications and users

This standard is valuable for:

  • Winding wire manufacturers specifying rectangular aluminium wire with polyvinyl acetal enamel.
  • Design engineers of motors, transformers, inductors and electrical machines who require aluminium rectangular conductors with defined thermal and mechanical properties.
