Overview

ISO 5925-1:2007/Amd 1:2015 is an amendment to the international test method for fire tests - smoke-control door and shutter assemblies, specifically addressing Part 1: ambient- and medium-temperature leakage tests. The amendment refines procedures for measuring leakage rates of smoke-control doors and shutters under non-fire (ambient and medium temperature) conditions, clarifying instrumentation and chamber test methods used by test laboratories and manufacturers.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Leakage measurement methods: Amendment 1 adds detailed procedures (Annex B.3) defining two measurement approaches:
    • Method A - uses an inlet and an outlet pipe on opposite chamber walls; measures flow in both pipes and corrects for temperature differences. Notes that Method A requires more robust heating because outlet air can be hotter than inlet air.
    • Method B - uses a single inlet pipe with controlled inlet pressure; measures only the inlet flow and subtracts chamber background leakage.
  • Airflow measurement: Use a suitable device (for example, a hot wire anemometer) traversed across pipe diameter to determine average air speed (V_avg). Combine V_avg with pipe cross-sectional area to compute volumetric flow Q (m3/h).
  • Measurement placement and pipe sizing: Air-speed measurement shall be taken at least nine pipe diameters downstream of the flow source and a minimum of five pipe diameters from the chamber wall. Pipes should be sized to allow accurate traverse averaging (minimum recommended diameter ~75 mm).
  • Temperature correction: Flow rates must be corrected to standard conditions; Method A specifically requires care to account for hotter outlet air.
  • Chamber leakage determination: Background leakage is measured by hermetically sealing the chamber opening (recommended EPDM rubber sheet mounted in a frame and sealed with silicone caulk) and measuring sealed chamber flow.
  • Pressure control guidance: Amendment discusses inlet control options - valve control versus a bleed T and recommends leaking excess pressure at the inlet (bleed T) or using a variac-controlled blower for finer control.

Applications and users

This amendment is intended for:

  • Fire test laboratories performing smoke leakage and performance testing of smoke-control doors and shutters
  • Manufacturers and quality assurance teams validating door and shutter assemblies
  • Fire safety engineers and consultants specifying smoke containment performance
  • Building authorities and code officials referencing standardized leakage test methods

Related standards

  • ISO 5925 series (Part 1 is focused on ambient/medium-temperature leakage). For fire exposure and high-temperature behavior, consult other parts of the ISO 5925 family and applicable fire-resistance standards.
