BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 151, Marking of Hatchway Beams, was drawn up by
Technical Committee ISO/TC 8, Shipbuilding Details, the Secretariat of which is held by
the Stichting Nederlands Normalisatie-instituut ("1).
A draft proposal for the marking of hatchway beams, based on the Netherlands
Standard N 1334, was discussed at the third meeting of Technical Committee ISO/TC 8,
held in Genoa, in November 1956. This draft proposal, with the addition of a minimum
dimension of 500 mm for the distance between the holes in the web of the beam and the
extreme end of the beam, was unanimously accepted by the members of the Technical
Committee present at that third meeting.

In the final letter ballot within the Technical Committee, the draft proposal was
adopted as a Draft IS0 Recommendation by all the members of the Technical Corn-
mittee, except New Zealand, which uses a system of marking by colours.
On 4 December 1958, the Draft IS0 Recommendation (No. 260) was distributed to
all the IS0 Member Bodies and was approved by the following Member Bodies:

Burma Japan United Kingdom
Czechoslovakia Net herlands U.S.S.R.
Denmark Pakistan
Finland Romania
No Member Body opposed the approval of the Draft.

The Draft IS0 Recommendation was then submitted by correspondence to the IS0
Council, which decided, in February 1960, to accept it as an IS0 RECOMMENDATION.

Marking B indicates, for a given deck, the hatchway to which the beam belongs,

HISTORIQUE
La Recommandation ISO/R 151, Marquage des barrots d’écoutille, a été élaborée par
le Comité Technique ISO/TC 8, Constructions navales, dont le Secrétariat est assuré par la
Stichting Nederlands Normalisatie-instituut (“1).
Au cours de sa troisième réunion, tenue à Gênes, en novembre 1956, le Comité Tech-
nique ISO/TC 8 discuta d’un avant-projet basé sur la norme néerlandaise N 1334, concer-
nant le marquage des barrots d’écoutille. Cet avant-projet auquel avait été ajoutée une
dimension minimale de 500 mm pour la distance entre les trous de l’âme du barrot et
l’extrémité de ce barrot, fut accepté à l’unanimité par les membres du Comité Technique
présents à cette troisième réunion.
Lors du dernier vote par correspondance au sein du Comité Technique, l’avant-projet
fut accepté comme Projet de Recommandation IS0 par tous les membres du Comité
Technique à l’exception de la Nouvelle-Zélande qui utilise un système de marquage par
couleurs.
En date du 4 décembre 1958, ce Projet de Recommandation IS0 (NO 260) fut distribué
à tous les Comités Membres de 1’ISO et approuvé par les Comités Membres suivants:

Aucun Comité Membre ne se déclara opposé à l’approbation du Projet.
Le Projet de Recommandation IS0 fut alors soumis par correspondance au Conseil
de 1’ISO qui décida, en février 1960, de l’accepter comme RECOMMANDATION ISO.
