Overview
ISO 11084-1:1993 - Graphic technology - Register systems for photographic materials, foils and paper - Part 1: Three-pin systems specifies the positions and dimensions for three-pin register systems used in prepress and press environments. The standard defines how to position centre and paired register holes and the corresponding register pins to achieve accurate alignment of originals, separations and printing plates on press and prepress equipment. It applies to punched non-metallic materials such as photographic materials, foils and papers, and to machines that punch or use these register systems. It does not apply to punched metallic materials.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and applicability: Targets punched photographic materials, foils and papers; excludes metallic printing plates.
- Definitions: Clear terms for register system, register, register hole, register pin and register pin carrier to ensure consistent interpretation.
- Hole and pin arrangement:
- A three-pin system with a centre register hole plus one or more symmetric pairs of register holes along a punching centreline.
- Pairs of register holes position material perpendicular to the punching centreline; dimensions between hole centres are specified for standard widths (figure guidance) and increase in 200 mm increments for larger sizes.
- Punching is performed at the material margin; the distance from the punching centreline to the edge is not specified.
- Form and tolerances:
- Examples include rectangular holes (5 mm × 10 mm cited as meeting requirements) and allowable pin cross-sections (as per referenced figures).
- Pin height and pin carrier thickness are not specified in this part.
- Referenced standards: ISO 286-1 and ISO 286-2 (system of limits and fits) are normative references for tolerances and fits.
Applications and practical value
- Prepress and repro houses: Ensure consistent placement of originals and colour separations when producing films, proofs and plates.
- Press manufacturers and plate makers: Design equipment and fixtures that accept standard three-pin registers for interchangeability.
- Punch machinery and tooling suppliers: Manufacture punching devices and jigs that create standardised register holes for predictable alignment.
- Benefits:
- Improves registration accuracy across suppliers and equipment.
- Reduces waste by enabling consistent margins and repeatable positioning.
- Promotes interoperability between punching devices, register pin carriers, and printing presses.
Who should use this standard
- Print production managers, prepress technicians, equipment designers, quality engineers, and tooling manufacturers working with photographic materials, foils and paper in graphic technology and printing workflows.
Related standards
- ISO 286-1:1988 and ISO 286-2:1988 (system of limits and fits) - referenced for tolerances.
- Future parts of ISO 11084 planned to cover two‑pin and combined systems (edge alignment and reduced margin systems).
Keywords: ISO 11084-1, three-pin register system, register holes, register pins, graphic technology, photographic materials, prepress, punching equipment, printing plate registration.

ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national Standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work
of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Esch member body interested in a subject for
which a technical committee has been established has the right to be

ISO 11084~1:1993(E) -
Introduction
lt is intended to develop International Standards to reduce the variety of
register Systems in graphic technology to achieve greater economy in the
use of consumable materials and processing equipment.
ISO 11084 relates to photographic materials, foils and Paper, and other
non-metallic materials. Metallic printing plates, forms etc. have different
mechanical properties, and will be the subject of a future International
Standard.
This part of ISO 11084 covers the three-pin System, giving central align-
ment of the punched material. Future Parts are planned to cover two-pin
Systems, giving edge alignment, and two- and three-pin Systems, which
allow a smaller margin and thereby reduce material wastage.
