Aerospace series - Test method for metallic materials - Ultrasonic inspection of bars, plates, forging stock and forgings - Part 1: General requirements

This European Standard defines the ultrasonic inspection procedure for rolled, drawn, extruded and forged billets, bars and plates, rolled rings and forgings with a uniform square, rectangular or round cross section. It does not cover critical rotating parts in steel, titanium, titanium alloys, aluminium alloys and heat resisting alloys that are to be inspected in accordance with the technical supply conditions of the relevant EN standards or internal specifications.
For products with geometries other than those described above, the test conditions and acceptance criteria shall be agreed between the manufacturer and purchaser.

Overview

EN 4050-1:2012 - “Aerospace series - Ultrasonic inspection of bars, plates, forging stock and forgings - Part 1: General requirements” is a CEN European Standard that defines general procedural requirements for ultrasonic testing (UT) of metallic aerospace materials. It covers rolled, drawn, extruded and forged billets, bars, plates, rolled rings and forgings with uniform square, rectangular or round cross-sections. Critical rotating parts called out in other EN supply conditions are excluded. For unusual geometries, test conditions and acceptance criteria are agreed between manufacturer and purchaser.

Key topics and technical requirements

This Part 1 establishes the framework and minimum requirements for ultrasonic inspection; it must be used together with Parts 2–4 for complete test performance, block specification and acceptance criteria.

Major technical topics covered:

  • Inspection scope: billets, bars, plates, rolled rings and forgings with uniform cross-sections (rolled, drawn, extruded, forged).
  • Inspection methods: contact or immersion UT depending on material standard and application.
  • Signal evaluation methods: flat bottom hole (FBH) comparison, DGS (Distance Gain Size) and DAC (Distance/Amplitude Correction) approaches.
  • Calibration and standard test blocks: use of acoustically similar test blocks or correction curves; reference reflector requirements.
  • Test equipment and probes: electronic equipment, transducers and related performance considerations.
  • Scan strategy: beam angle selection, scanning modes for plates, rectangular and round bars, forging stock and rings; scanning pitch, speed and overlap.
  • Quality documentation: mandatory ultrasonic technique sheet and information that must be provided (e.g., material, surface condition, equipment, calibration standards, couplant, attenuation, scan plan, recording and defect evaluation procedures).
  • Performance & personnel: cross-references to Part 2 (performance), Part 3 (reference blocks), Part 4 (acceptance criteria) and EN 4179 for qualification of NDT personnel.
  • Terms & definitions: key UT concepts such as dead zone, resolution, working sensitivity, noise (grass), and test beam diameter.

Applications and users

EN 4050-1 is intended for:

  • Aerospace manufacturers and suppliers of metallic bars, plates, forgings and rings.
  • NDT engineers and ultrasonic technicians developing inspection procedures.
  • Quality assurance and inspection teams preparing inspection schedules and reports.
  • Purchasers and inspectors who must agree technique sheets and acceptance criteria.

Practical uses:

  • Creating documented ultrasonic technique sheets for orders and inspection schedules.
  • Specifying calibration, scan plans and reporting requirements for UT acceptance.
  • Harmonizing UT practices across aerospace supply chains.
