Short link chain for lifting purposes - Safety - Part 5: Chain slings - Grade 4

This Part of EN 818 specifies the requirements related to safety, methods of rating and testing of single-, two-, three-, four-leg and endless chain slings, assembled by welding, using short link grade 4 medium tolerance chain conforming to EN 818-3 together with the appropriate range of components of the same grade in accordance with prEN 1677-5 and 6. These chain slings are intended for lifting objects, materials or goods.  NOTE1: Instructions for use and maintenance of chain slings are covered by prEN 818-6.  The hazards covered by this Part of the standard are identified in clause 4.  Annex A gives an alternative method of rating and marking a chain sling for a specific lifting application  Annex B contains the bases for calculation of working load limits.  Annex C gives an example of a designation system for chain slings.  Annex D gives an example of identification tags for chain slings.  Annex ZA gives the relationship with EU Directives.

Overview

EN 818-5:1999/prA1 - Short link chain for lifting purposes - Safety - Part 5: Chain slings - Grade 4 (CEN) specifies safety, rating and testing requirements for welded chain slings made from short link Grade 4 medium tolerance chain (as referenced in EN 818-3). It covers single-, two-, three-, four-leg and endless chain slings assembled with compatible Grade 4 components (see EN 1677 series). The standard addresses hazards (clause 4), marking, rating methods, testing procedures and the relationship with EU Directives (Annex ZA).

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and components
    • Applies to welded chain slings using short link Grade 4 chain conforming to EN 818-3.
    • Requires compatible Grade 4 components in accordance with EN 1677-5/EN 1677-6.
  • Rating and testing
    • Defines methods for determining Working Load Limits (WLL) and manufacturing proof force.
    • Specifies mechanical testing and inspection requirements for single- and multi-leg and endless slings.
    • Annex B provides bases for calculation of WLL; Annex A gives an alternative rating/marking method for specific applications.
  • Marking, identification and documentation
    • Requirements for sling identification and marking (examples in Annex D).
    • Annex C illustrates a designation system for chain slings.
  • Hazards and safety
    • Clause 4 identifies hazards associated with use, assembly and inspection of chain slings.
    • Notes that user instructions and maintenance requirements are covered in EN 818-6.
  • Regulatory alignment
    • Annex ZA maps the standard to relevant EU Directives for conformity and CE implications.

Practical applications and users

  • Typical applications: lifting, rigging and material handling in construction, manufacturing, logistics, offshore and heavy industry where Grade 4 short link chain slings are used.
  • Primary users:
    • Sling and chain manufacturers and assemblers (quality and testing).
    • Rigging engineers and lifting equipment designers (specification and selection).
    • Safety officers, inspection bodies and test laboratories (compliance testing, WLL verification).
    • Procurement and maintenance teams (sourcing, marking, inspection schedules).
  • Benefits: safer selection and use of chain slings, consistent WLL calculation, traceable identification and compliance with European safety requirements.

Related standards

  • EN 818-1 (terms & definitions)
  • EN 818-3 (short link chain - Grade 4 chain specification)
  • EN 818-6 (instructions for use and maintenance)
  • EN 1677-5 / EN 1677-6 (components for chain slings)
  • EN ISO 12100-1 / EN ISO 12100-2 (machine safety / risk assessment)
  • Note: Annex ZA links EN 818-5 to applicable EU Directives.
