Overview
EN ISO 7236:2016 (ISO 7236:2014) specifies requirements for mounting attachments for demountable signal masts used on push‑tows and push barges in inland navigation. The standard covers the construction, dimensions, manufacture, arrangement and means of attachment of mounting attachments that accept a mast lower part designed to carry navigation lights. It ensures uniformity so masts can be mounted quickly, safely and correctly across different barges and push vessels.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Applies to mounting attachments for demountable masts with an integral mast lower part for placing lights on push barges.
- Definitions: Clear terms for mounting attachment, mast stand, mast clamp and mast lower part are given to standardize components and interfaces.
- Dimensions and tolerances: Specific dimensions (in millimetres) and general tolerances are specified; compliance is required for the dimensions shown in the standard even though alternative designs are permitted if they meet those dimensions. General tolerances follow ISO 2768 (class c).
- Mast stand & clamp: The mast stand secures the mast lower part and prevents rotation; the mast clamp secures the top of the mast lower portion. Fastening details (e.g., captive screws, nuts or wing nuts) and example arrangements are illustrated.
- Arrangement on push barge: Rules for positioning attachments on vessel sides and centreline (side attachments must not obstruct walkways; centre attachments may be rotatable by 90°) and alignment requirements (bearing pins aligned parallel to longitudinal/transverse axes; mast axis perpendicular to design waterline).
- Materials: Weldable steel per EN 10025-2 for structural parts; screws/nuts/bolts for clamps must be stainless or non‑corrodible.
- Testing: Conformance is verified by visual examination and measurement against the technical requirements in the standard.
- Designation: Specified product name format: “Mounting attachment ISO 7236”.
Applications and users
- Primary users: shipbuilders, barge operators, naval architects, equipment manufacturers and regulatory authorities involved in inland navigation.
- Practical uses:
- Ensuring interchangeability of demountable signal masts between push vessels and barges.
- Designing and retrofitting push barges so mast installation is safe, repeatable and compliant.
- Specifying procurement and inspection criteria for mast fittings and related hardware.
- Safety impact: Standardized mounting attachments ensure correct seating and orientation of navigation lights, supporting safe push‑tow operations in poor visibility and adverse weather.
