Overview
SIST EN 13411-1:2003+A1:2008 establishes the minimum safety and performance requirements for non-welded general purpose steel thimbles used as terminations in steel wire rope slings. Developed by the Slovenski inštitut za standardizacijo (SIST), this European Standard is fully aligned with EN 13411-1:2002+A1:2008. It specifies essential criteria for the design, material, construction, and testing of steel thimbles fabricated from plate material, ensuring compatibility with steel wire ropes of 8 mm to 60 mm diameter as detailed in EN 12385-4. The standard supports compliance with the EU Machinery Directives to ensure machinery safety across European markets.
Key Topics
- Scope and Purpose: The standard focuses on non-welded general-purpose steel thimbles for use in wire rope slings with six or eight strands, ranging from 8 mm to 60 mm in diameter. It excludes reeving thimbles and solid thimbles.
- Safety Requirements: Detailed clauses address potential hazards, such as mechanical failure and fitting errors, providing requirements to minimize risks associated with the use of steel thimbles in lifting applications.
- Essential Criteria:
- Dimensions: All sizes must conform to defined dimensional tolerances ensuring a proper fit and safe performance.
- Material: Thimbles must be produced from steel in accordance with EN 10025, with allowances for protective coatings per ISO 1461.
- Construction: Thimbles must be free from defects and designed for safe insertion and securement of rope components; the standard permits negotiation of end shape between buyer and supplier.
- Type Testing: Mandatory type testing to verify load-bearing capacity and dimensional stability after loading is specified, ensuring thimbles will withstand typical operational forces without significant deformation.
Applications
Steel wire rope thimbles are critical accessories in lifting equipment and general rigging. Their primary function is to protect the rope eye against wear, deformation, and mechanical damage, extending wire rope service life and maintaining load integrity. Typical practical applications include:
- Lifting Slings: Used in construction, shipping, and industrial environments to facilitate safe and secure lifting of heavy loads.
- Cranes and Hoists: Essential for ensuring safe end terminations on wire ropes used in hoisting and crane systems.
- Rigging Setups: Provide robust eye terminations for guy wires, structural supports, and other tensioning applications.
By specifying requirements for thimble dimensions, materials, construction, and verification, SIST EN 13411-1:2003+A1:2008 enables manufacturers and users to ensure consistent product quality and compliance, reducing risks of load failure and enhancing workplace safety.
Related Standards
To fully implement safe and effective steel wire rope assemblies, consider these related standards:
- EN 12385-4: Steel wire ropes - Safety - Stranded ropes for general lifting applications
- EN 10025: Specification for hot rolled products of non-alloy structural steels - Technical delivery conditions
- EN ISO 9001: Quality management systems - Requirements
- ISO 1461: Metallic coatings - Hot dip galvanized coatings on fabricated iron and steel articles
- EN 13411 Series: Other parts cover splicing of eyes, ferrule secured eyes, socketing, wedge sockets, wire rope grips, and additional termination methods.
SIST EN 13411-1:2003+A1:2008 is an essential standard for anyone involved in the design, manufacture, or use of lifting accessories and steel wire rope terminations, ensuring high levels of safety, performance, and regulatory compliance in line with European and global best practices.
