Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national Standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of
preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Esch member body interested in a subject for which
a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented
on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-
governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take patt in the work. ISO
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
International Standard ISO 8388 was prepared by Technical Committee
ISOTTC 38, Textiles, Subcommittee SC 20, Fabric descriptions.
Annexes A to C of this International Standard are for information only.

Introduction
NOTES for the English-speaking user of this International Standard
1 In conformity with the French term “a base jersey ”, the preferred equivalent
term “jersey-based” is used throughout for Weft-knitted and Warp-knitted fabrics
produced on one set of needles. Historically, the permitted term “Single jersey-
based” is actually a pleonasm, as research has shown that the term “Single”
indicates that the fabric is made on one set of needles and “jersey” indicates the
Same.
2 The term “jersey” used as a collective term for both jersey-based and rib-based
fabrics would lead to confusion when translated into French, as “a base jersey”
denotes solely a fabric made on one set of needles.
3 The term “double-jersey” does not encompass all rib-based fabrics (see
3.3.16).
4 The term “plain jersey fabric” denotes solely a fabric that is characterized by a
uniform, non-patterned surface in which all the stitches are of identical size and
configuration and are intermeshed in the same direction.
bar
5 Warp-knitted jersey-based fabrics (3.5) are also known as single-needle
fabrics, and Warp-knitted rib-based fabrics (3.7) as double needle bar fabrics.
