Overview

SIST EN 60335-2-76:2005/A11:2008 is a European standard specifying safety requirements for electric fence energizers, a category of household and similar electrical appliances. Published by CENELEC and harmonized across most European countries, this amendment (A11) updates the original EN 60335-2-76:2005 standard to enhance safety guidelines and performance testing methods.

The standard applies to electric fence energizers used in domestic and commercial settings to deter trespassing or contain animals. It ensures that these devices meet strict reliability and safety criteria to prevent electrical hazards during normal operation.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Implementation
The amendment must be implemented by national standardization bodies of CENELEC member states by September 2008, with conflicting national standards withdrawn by 2010. Switzerland is excluded from mandatory adoption. The standard supports consistent safety enforcement across EU countries.

  • Definitions and Testing Conditions
The update revises key definitions, such as the standard load used in testing energizer output. The standard load includes a non-inductive resistor (R1) valued between 50 Ω and 500 Ω, combined with a non-inductive variable resistor (R2) arranged to maximize output energy or current for worst-case safety testing.

  • Performance Limits
Critical performance criteria specify that energy per impulse delivered to the standard load resistor R1 must not exceed 5 joules, and the peak current must not exceed 20 amperes. These thresholds protect users from excessive electrical shock and device damage.

  • Construction and Safety Requirements
The amendment enforces stringent requirements on the construction of electric fence energizers to reduce electrical hazards. These include insulation, casing durability, and fail-safe mechanisms to mitigate risks of electric shock under various operating conditions.

Applications

SIST EN 60335-2-76:2005/A11:2008 is essential for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and regulatory bodies involved in:

  • Design and Manufacture
Ensuring electric fence energizers comply with defined safety and performance parameters before market release.

  • Product Certification
Harmonized testing protocols enable certification that products meet EU safety laws, contributing to consumer confidence.

  • Safety Compliance
Utilities and agricultural operators benefit from safer electric fencing solutions that protect livestock, deter intrusions, and minimize risk to users.

  • Market Access
Compliance facilitates smooth access and legal sale of electric fence energizers across European countries adhering to CENELEC standards.
