Environmental matrices - Determination of total dissolved solids (TDS) in water and eluates
This document specifies a method for the determination of total dissolved solids (TDS) in water and eluates (see Annex A), provided they are not volatile under the conditions specified or that they do not release water molecules from hydration. It applies to water and eluates containing more than 100 mg/l of total dissolved solids. Samples with lower amounts of dissolved solids can be analysed by repetition of the drying step.
Matriksi v okolju - Določanje celotnih trdnih raztopljenih snovi (TDS) v vodi in izlužkih

Overview
SIST EN 15216:2022 is a European Standard developed by CEN for the determination of total dissolved solids (TDS) in water and eluates. This method applies specifically to environmental solid matrices where dissolved solids are non-volatile under specified conditions and do not release water molecules from hydration. It is intended for water and eluate samples containing more than 100 mg/l of TDS. For samples with lower concentrations, the drying step can be repeated to achieve accurate measurement.
The standard replaces the earlier EN 15216:2007 version, introducing clarifications regarding drying procedures and handling sample inhomogeneity. It supports consistent and reliable analysis essential for water quality monitoring, environmental assessment, and regulatory compliance.
Key Topics
Scope & Applicability
Suitable for environmental water matrices and eluates from solid samples with TDS >100 mg/l. Includes procedures for filtering, drying, and weighing to quantify dissolved solids.Principle of Measurement
The test sample is filtered (using a 0.45 µm membrane) to remove suspended solids, then evaporated to dryness at 105 ± 5 °C. The residue mass represents total dissolved solids.Sample Handling
Samples should be analyzed immediately or stored at 2–8 °C for no longer than one week to prevent changes affecting test accuracy.Equipment Requirements
Includes a drying oven or infrared drying system, desiccator with drying agent, precision analytical balance (1 mg accuracy), membrane filters, filtration apparatus, and an evaporation dish able to withstand required temperatures.Calculation Method
The concentration of TDS (mg/l) is calculated by subtracting the dish mass before and after drying, divided by the volume of filtered sample tested, ensuring results are rounded to three significant figures.Quality Control
Drying continues until constant mass is achieved (mass change <0.5% or 2 mg). Duplicate testing is recommended if sample inhomogeneity is suspected.Reporting Requirements
Test reports must reference SIST EN 15216:2022, sample identification, calculated TDS concentration, any procedural deviations, and drying method details when alternatives to standard drying ovens are used.
Applications
Environmental Monitoring
Measurement of TDS in surface waters, groundwater, and eluates from solid waste matrices to assess pollution levels and natural water quality.Wastewater Treatment and Compliance
Determining dissolved solids in wastewater influents and effluents to monitor treatment efficiency and ensure regulatory standards are met.Soil and Waste Leachate Analysis
Analysis of eluates derived from solid matrices such as sludge, solid waste, or contaminated soils, supporting environmental risk assessments and remediation strategies.Industrial Water Quality Control
Ensuring water used in industrial processes meets required purity specifications by monitoring dissolved solids content.
