Overview

SIST EN 1992-1-2:2023/oprA1:2026 is the draft amendment to the European Standard Eurocode 2, specifically addressing the structural fire design of concrete structures. Developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), this standard offers a harmonized framework for designing concrete structures to safely withstand fire exposure. It is intended for use alongside other Eurocodes, notably prEN 1992-1-1 and EN 1991-1-2, and focuses on essential safety requirements, performance levels, and the operational assumptions necessary for structural fire resistance.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Applicability: The document covers the design of concrete structures required to perform loadbearing and/or separating functions during fire events. It applies to both normal-weight concrete (up to C100/115) and lightweight concrete (up to LC50/60), ensuring broad applicability in building construction.
  • Principles and Application Rules: SIST EN 1992-1-2:2023/oprA1:2026 establishes the essential principles and procedures for fire design, detailing how requirements and performance targets should be met under the accidental action of fire.
  • Design Scenarios and Assumptions: The standard assumes proper selection of fire scenarios conducted by qualified personnel, and requires that any specified fire protection measures are maintained throughout the structure’s life.
  • Tabulated and Simplified Design Methods: It references tabulated data and simplified design methods based on tests and calculation models, offering designers practical tools for compliance.
  • Advanced Design Methods: Guidance is provided for employing advanced analytical techniques, emphasizing the importance of validation against test results and the necessity for sensitivity analyses to assure structural safety.
  • Normative Updates: Amendments clarify cross-references, update terminology (such as replacing "ambient temperature design" with "normal temperature design"), and refine definitions for reinforced concrete elements and fire resistance evaluation.

Applications

SIST EN 1992-1-2:2023/oprA1:2026 is central to the safety-focused design of concrete buildings and civil structures throughout Europe. Its practical applications include:

  • Design of Loadbearing Elements: Structural elements like beams, columns, and slabs are designed to maintain mechanical stability during fire, ensuring overall building safety.
  • Separating Functions: Structural fire design considers non-loadbearing components’ ability to prevent fire spread between building zones, maintaining their integrity under fire loading.
  • Compliance with Regulatory Requirements: The standard empowers engineers and designers to meet mandatory fire resistance criteria laid out in building regulations, ensuring legal compliance.
  • Use of Design Tools: By providing tabulated data, simplified methods, and guidance for advanced analysis, it supports both routine and complex projects, catering to a spectrum of design needs in the construction sector.
  • Material and Execution Guidance: The standard aligns with related product and material standards, serving as a reference for specifying requirements for concrete, reinforcement, and fire protection systems.

Related Standards

  • prEN 1992-1-1: General rules for the design of concrete structures, used in conjunction with Part 1-2.
  • EN 1991-1-2: Actions on structures exposed to fire, providing essential input data for structural fire design.
  • EN 1990 (all parts): Basis of structural and geotechnical design, establishing general design principles and safety requirements.
  • EN 1993-1-2: Fire design for steel structures, relevant for mixed-material construction and comparative approaches.
  • Newly Referenced Eurocodes: Includes developing standards for glass structures (EN 19100), fibre-polymer composite structures (EN 19101), and tensioned membrane structures (EN 19102), reflecting ongoing evolution in European structural codes.

SIST EN 1992-1-2:2023/oprA1:2026 remains essential for ensuring consistent, robust, and legal fire-resistant design for concrete structures, highly relevant for designers, engineers, code officials, and construction professionals across Europe.
