The SIST EN ISO 10087:2019 standard serves as a crucial framework for the identification of small crafts, addressing a significant need for consistency and clarity in the maritime industry. By establishing a comprehensive coding system, this standard enhances the traceability and documentation of small crafts, which is essential for manufacturers, regulators, and consumers alike. The scope of the standard is well-defined, applying to a variety of small craft types and materials, including those with a hull length (LH) of up to 24 meters. This broad applicability ensures that all manufacturers, regardless of the craft type, can implement this standardized identification system, enhancing interoperability across the industry. One of the standout strengths of SIST EN ISO 10087:2019 is its detailed structure for the identification codes it establishes. By including unique elements like the identification code of the manufacturer’s country, the manufacturer’s identification code, a serial number, and the month and year of manufacture, the standard provides a comprehensive identification mechanism. Additionally, it facilitates the inclusion of the model year, which is vital for both regulatory compliance and consumer awareness. The relevance of this standard is underscored by its focus on facilitating the identification of small crafts in an increasingly complex global market. As the popularity of small craft continues to grow, a standardized coding system enables efficient tracking, safety assessments, and maintenance records, ultimately contributing to improved safety and reliability in the maritime sector.
