CEN/TC 33/WG 5 - Industrial, commercial and garage doors and gates

This European Standard specifies requirements and test methods for the safety in use of power operated door, gate and barrier, intended for installation in areas in the reach of persons, and for which the main intended use is  giving safe access for goods and vehicles accompanied or driven by persons in industrial, commercial or residential premises.
This European Standard also covers power operated vertically moving commercial doors such as rolling shutters and rolling grilles, used in retail premises which are mainly provided for goods protection.
This European Standard deals with all significant hazards, hazardous situations and events relevant to the power operation of industrial, commercial and garage doors, and gates when they are used as intended and under conditions of misuse which are reasonably foreseeable as identified in Clause 4.
All lifetime phases of the machinery including transportation, assembly, dismantling, disabling and scrapping are considered by this standard.
This European Standard does not apply to
-   lock gates and dock gates;
-   doors on lifts;
-   doors on vehicles;
-   armoured doors;
-   doors mainly for the retention of animals, unless they are at the site perimeter ;
-   theatre textile curtains;
-   horizontally moving power operated doors mainly intended for pedestrian use;
-   doors outside the reach of people (such as crane gantry fences);
-   railway barriers;
-   barriers intended solely for use by pedestrians;
-   barriers used solely for vehicles on motorways.
Whenever the term "door" is used in this document, it shall be deemed to cover the full scope of types and variances of doors, gates and barriers in the scope of this Standard.
This European Standard does not deal with any specific requirements on noise emitted from power operated door, gate and barrier, intended for installation in areas in the reach of persons, and for which the main intended use is giving safe access for goods and vehicles accompanied or driven by persons in industrial, commercial or residential premises as their noise emission is not considered to be a relevant hazard.
NOTE   Noise emission of power operated doors is not a significant hazard for the users of these products. It is a comfort aspect.
This European Standard is not applicable to machinery which are manufactured before the date of publication of the standard.

This document applies only to doors which are not part of the load carrying structure of the building.

1.1   General
This European Standard specifies the safety and performance requirements, except resistance to fire and smoke control characteristics, for industrial, commercial, garage doors and gates and barriers, intended for installation in areas in the reach of persons, and for which the main intended uses are giving safe access for goods and vehicles accompanied or driven by persons in industrial, commercial or residential premises.
Fire resisting and/or smoke control characteristics for industrial, commercial, garage doors and gates are covered by EN 16034.
This European Standard also covers commercial doors such as rolling shutters and rolling grilles used in retail premises which are mainly provided for the access of persons rather than vehicles or goods.
These doors can include pass doors incorporated in the door leaf which are also covered by this European Standard.
These devices can be manually or power operated.
This European Standard does not cover operation in environments where the electromagnetic disturbances are outside the range of those specified in EN 61000 6 3.
1.2   Exclusions
This European Standard does not apply to the following which are intended for a different use:
-   lock gates and dock gates;
-   doors on lifts;
-   doors on vehicles;
-   armoured doors;
-   doors mainly for the retention of animals;
-   theatre textile curtains;
-   horizontally moving power operated doors mainly intended for pedestrian use in accordance with EN 16361;
-   revolving doors of any size;
-   railway barriers;
-   barriers used solely for vehicles.
This European Standard does not cover the radio part of doors. If a radio operating device is used, the relevant ETSI standards should be applied in addition.
This European Standard does not contain any specific requirement for doors which are moving because of energy stored by dedicated means from human power such as manually tensioned springs.
This European Standard does not contain any specific requirements for doors on escape routes. The ability to open the door leaf safely and easily cannot normally be achieved by industrial, commercial and garage doors due to size, weight and/or mode of operation.
The noise emission of powered doors and gates is not considered to be a relevant hazard. Therefore this European Standard does not contain any specific requirements on noise in relation to the Machinery Directive.
1.3   Specific applications
This European Standard should also apply to power operated doors which have been created by the addition of power operation to an installed manual door in respect of the relevant requirements. Annex ZA does not apply to this kind of door.
It also identifies requirements and classes of performance for additional characteristics considered to be of importance to the trade.
When a door is part of the load carrying structure of the building the requirements of this European Standard can apply on a voluntary basis in addition to the requirements for the load carrying structure, which are not dealt with in this European Standard. Annex ZA does not apply for this kind of doors.

This Technical Report gives simplified calculation relating to the energy losses through doors taking into account:
-   heat transmission with closed door by temperature difference,
-   air leakage through a closed door due to wind,
-   air leakage through a closed door due to a chimney effect, and
-   air infiltration with a door open (due to wind).

1.1   General
This European Standard specifies a method for calculating the thermal transmittance of industrial, commercial and garage doors in a closed position.
The doors are intended for installation in areas in the reach of people, for which the main intended uses are giving safe access for goods, vehicles and persons in industrial, commercial or residential premises.
The doors may be manually or power operated.
This document applies to all doors provided in accordance with EN 13241-1.
The calculation can include different types of glazing, frames with or without thermal breaks, and different types of opaque panels and thermal bridge effects at the edge of the panel or joint between the glazed area, the frame area and the panel area.
This paper does not include the effects of solar radiation, heat transfer caused by air leakage, calculation of condensation, additional heat transfer at the corners and edges of the door connections to the main building structure, or thermal effects between the door and the main building structure.

1.1   General
This European Standard applies for design, construction and testing of sensitive protective devices where the device is used to detect pedestrians including in particular applications, slow moving elderly persons, slow moving disabled persons and children who may be exposed to injury by power operated doors, gates and barriers, electrically powered from a public supply and intended for installation in areas in the reach of persons, and for which the main intended uses are giving safe access for goods and vehicles accompanied or driven by persons in industrial, commercial, public or residential premises.
This standard also covers safety devices for commercial doors such as rolling shutters and rolling grilles when used as doors on retail premises which are mainly provided for the access of persons rather than vehicles or goods.
This standard deals with all significant hazards listed in annex A and specifies requirements to eliminate or minimise them.
This standard covers the requirements for electrical powered safety devices using mains supply provided for installation on or used in conjunction with powered doors in order to avoid hazardous situations which can be encountered when a door is used normally.
The sensitive protective device is designed to give a change in the output signal switching device which may be used to provide protection for the person being at risk. It applies to ready to use sensitive protective device and integrated sensitive protective device (mounted on or connected to a power operated door in normal use).
This standard only applies to door safety devices manufactured after the date of publication.

This European Standard specifies the terminology for doors, gates and barriers, intended for installation in areas in the reach of people, for which the main intended uses are giving safe access for goods and vehicles accompanied by persons in industrial and commercial premises and in residential garages. This standard specifies with the help of sketches most types of doors, gates and barriers in common use, irrespective of the material used. Doors for the passage of persons only are covered by prEN 12650-1 and prEN 12519.

This standard specifies the terms for parts of most types of doors, gates and barriers in common use. The terms used are therefore also applicable for barriers.

This document specifies requirements and test methods for sensitive protective equipment put separately on the market as safety components to be used with entrance equipment such as power operated industrial, commercial and garage doors, gates and barriers, power operated pedestrian doors and power operated pedestrian entrance control equipment.
NOTE   Requirements for the safe function of the combination of protective device and industrial, commercial and garage doors and barriers are given in EN 12453.

- revolving doors of any size; - doors outside the reach of people (such as crane gantry fences); - railway barriers; - barriers used solely for vehicles. 1.3 Specific applications Doors, gates and barriers can be of sliding, sidefolding, tilting, pivoting, rolling, vertical lifting and other types with many variances for each type. If not specified otherwise, the word "door" refers to any of these types and variances of doors, gates and barriers. In the following, a power-operated door is considered as a whole. Nevertheless such a door can be the result of
the implementation of a drive unit onto a manual door. In that case, this standard is applicable for the completed final installation.
Requirements for specific characteristics (such as fire resistance, blast-resistance, acoustic, escape route function, burglar resistance or thermal insulation, etc.) which certain doors are required to comply with, are notspecified in this standard. If the specifications of a standard on the special characteristics of such doors are in conflict with the requirements of this standard, that standard has preference.

This European Standard deals with all significant hazards, hazardous situations and events relevant to the power operation of industrial, commercial and garage doors, and gates when they are used as intended and under conditions of misuse which are reasonably foreseeable as identified in Clause 4.
All lifetime phases of the machinery including transportation, assembly, dismantling, disabling and scrapping are considered by this standard.
This European Standard does not apply to

-   doors on vehicles;
-   armoured doors;

NOTE   Noise emission of power operated doors is not a significant hazard for the users of these products. It is a comfort aspect.

This European Standard specifies requirements and classification systems for burglar resistant characteristics of pedestrian doorsets, windows, curtain walling, grilles and shutters. It is applicable to the following means of opening: Turning, tilting, folding, turn-tilting, top or bottom hung, sliding (horizontally and vertically) and rolling as well as fixed constructions. It also covers products that include items such as letter plates or ventilation grilles. It specifies requirements for the burglar resistance of a construction product (as defined in 3.1 of this standard).
This European Standard does not directly cover the resistance of locks and cylinders to attack with picking tools. It also does not cover precast concrete elements.
It also does not cover the attack of electric, electronic and electromagnetic operated burglar resistant construction products using attack methods that might defeat these characteristics.

Nevertheless such a door can be the result of
the implementation of a drive unit onto a manual door. In that case, this standard is applicable for the completed final installation.
Requirements for specific characteristics (such as fire resistance, blast-resistance, acoustic, escape route function, burglar resistance or thermal insulation, etc.) which certain doors are required to comply with, are notspecified in this standard. This standard applies to safety devices used on power operated doors, as defined and required in EN 12453 "Safety in use of power operated doors - Requirements and classification". This standard contains requirements for design, construction and testing of protective equipment where the equipment is used to detect persons who may be exposed to injury by doors and give an output signal which is used to provide protection for the person who is at risk. It applies to ready to use protective equipment and integrated protective equipment (mounted on or linked to a door as in normal use).
