ISO/TC 38/WG 21 - Ropes, cordage, slings and netting
Cordages, articles de corderies, élingues et nappes de filet
General Information
This document specifies the requirements related to safety, including methods of rating and testing sling constructions made from fibre ropes. It is applicable to ropes made of high modulus polyethylene (HMPE) fibre having a minimum reference number of 12 and a maximum reference number of 72. The fibre rope slings covered by this document are intended for general-purpose lifting operations only, i.e. when used for lifting objects, materials or goods which require no deviations from the requirements, design factors, or work load limits specified. This document does not cover slings used for the lifting of persons, potentially dangerous materials such as molten metal and acids, glass sheets, fissile materials, nuclear reactors and special (non-routine and engineered) lifting operations. This document can be used as a reference for lifting slings made with HMPE fibres to be used in special lifting operations.

This document specifies the main characteristics and test methods of new fibre ropes used for offshore station keeping. Fibre ropes for stationkeeping can be manufactured from different rope core material. This document provides general requirements applicable to all materials. The subsequent parts of the ISO 18692 series provide the specific requirements for each (rope core) material that are not addressed within this document.

This document specifies requirements for 8-strand braided ropes, for 12-strand braided ropes, and for covered rope constructions for general purpose made of high modulus polyethylene (HMPE), and gives rules for their designation. Many different types and grades of HMPE fibre exist which are commonly used to produce rope products. This document does not cover all variations in strength or product performance. The rope manufacturer is consulted to ensure the intended design meets the requirements of the application.

ISO 1805:2006 specifies a method of testing the breaking force and knot breaking force of netting yarns for fishing nets. Tests may be carried out in both the dry and wet states, but tests in the wet state on the knotted yarn are considered to be particularly appropriate in indicating the behaviour of the yarn in use.

ISO 18264:2016 specifies the requirements related to safety, including methods of rating and testing eye-and-eye and endless sling constructions used as single (1) leg, two (2) leg, three (3) leg or four (4) leg lifting configurations (with and without fittings). These sling constructions are made of 8-strand braided ropes (type L), 12-strand braided ropes (type T), covered rope constructions (type C) according to ISO 10325. Alternatively, other laid and braided rope constructions deviating from ISO 10325, but tested according to ISO 2307, may be used. This International Standard is applicable to rope constructions made of High Modulus Polyethylene [HMPE, also referred to as Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE)] fibre having a minimum reference number of 12 and a maximum reference number of 72, even though there is no direct link between rope reference numbers and the type of lifting operations, either general-purpose or special lifting operations. Parts of the braided load bearing constructions in such slings, or the whole sling, can be enclosed in a protective cover/jacket/sleeve. The protective cover/jacket/sleeve is designed to be non-load bearing as it is intended only for protection and containment of the load bearing core. The fibre rope slings covered by this International Standard are intended for general-purpose lifting operations only, i.e. when used for lifting objects, materials or goods which require no deviations from the requirements, safety factors, also referred to as design factors, or work load limits specified. Lifting operations not covered by this International Standard would include the lifting of persons, potentially dangerous materials such as molten metal and acids, glass sheets, fissile materials, nuclear reactors and special lifting operations. ISO 18264:2016 deals with the technical requirements to minimize the hazards listed in Clause 4 which can arise during the use of fibre rope slings when carried out in accordance with the instructions and specification given by the manufacturer, its authorized representative or qualified and/or competent person.

ISO 2307:2010 specifies, for ropes of different kinds, a method of determining each of the following characteristics: linear density; lay length; braid pitch; elongation; breaking force. The linear density, lay length and braided pitch are measured with the rope under a specified tension called the reference tension. The elongation corresponds to the measured increase in length of the rope when the tension to which it is subjected is increased from an initial value (reference tension) to a value equal to 50 % of the minimum specified breaking strength of the rope. The breaking force is the maximum force registered (or reached) during a breaking test on the test piece, carried out on a tensile testing machine with constant rate of traverse of the moving element. The breaking force values given in the tables of rope specifications are only valid when this type of testing machine is used. ISO 2307:2010 also provides a method for measuring water repellency, lubrication and finish content, and heat setting treatment, when requested by the customer.
