Overview
EN ISO 8442-2:1997 is a European adoption of ISO 8442-2 that sets out material, performance requirements and test methods for table cutlery and related table holloware in contact with food. Part 2 focuses on plated and stainless steel cutlery - referenced as requirements for gold‑plated (and plated) cutlery - and defines which types of cutlery are covered and excluded. This standard is part of the family of standards addressing food contact materials and cutlery safety.
Key Topics and Requirements
The standard addresses practical, safety‑related aspects of cutlery in contact with food, including:
- Scope of application: covers knives, forks, spoons, carving sets, ladles, children’s cutlery and other serving pieces.
- Material requirements: requirements for base materials such as stainless steel and for plated items (e.g., gold‑plated, silver‑plated on nickel silver or stainless steel).
- Performance requirements: expectations for durability, plating integrity and suitability for repeated use with food.
- Test methods: specified physical and chemical test methods to verify compliance with material and performance criteria.
- Exclusions: does not apply to cutlery made wholly of precious metals, aluminium, non‑stainless steel, or items made entirely of nickel silver.
These topics form the technical backbone used to assess whether cutlery is safe and fit for food contact in commercial and domestic contexts.
Applications and Who Uses It
EN ISO 8442-2:1997 is practical for stakeholders across the food and hospitality supply chain:
- Cutlery manufacturers - to design, specify and test plated and stainless steel products for market compliance.
- Quality and compliance laboratories - to perform the standard’s test methods and report conformity.
- Procurement and retail - to specify compliant cutlery for catering, hotels, restaurants and consumer products.
- Regulators and conformity assessors - to reference an accepted European/ISO benchmark for food contact cutlery.
- Importers and distributors - to verify that sourced cutlery meets EU/ISO expectations for material and performance.
Using this standard helps reduce corrosion, plating failure and other food‑safety risks associated with tableware.
Related Standards
- Other parts of the ISO 8442 series (general cutlery and table holloware standards) and corresponding EN/ISO food contact material standards are commonly referenced alongside EN ISO 8442-2:1997 for a complete compliance program.
