This document applies to all thermally insulated means of transport, including: trucks, trailers, tanks, vans, wagons, containers for land transport, small containers, packaging. It is related to every type of insulation. If certain temperatures are due to be maintained independently of external conditions, the above means of transport could be additionally provided with a cooling and/or heating device.
This document specifies the terminology, the requirements for thermal insulation, air tightness, test provisions, dimensioning of containers with and without cooling and/or heating device.
This document also specifies the test provisions for new and in service equipment(s).
This document specifies the terminology, the requirements for thermal insulation, air tightness, test provisions for K-value. This document does not specify further land transport requirements with regard to dimensions, weights, etc. This document does not cover safety requirements. This document does not specify special requirements for sea containers covered by ISO 1496-2.

This document (EN 17066-1:2019) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 413 “Insulated

means of transport for temperature sensitive goods with or without cooling and/or heating device”, the

secretariat of which is held by DIN.

This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an

identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by January 2020, and conflicting national standards shall

be withdrawn at the latest by January 2020.

Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of

1 Scope

4 Requirements for containers and kits
4.1 General

All containers shall be designed in order to reach the relevant K-value for its application.

4.2 Materials and components

The materials shall be durable and shall not encourage the development of mould or emit odours.

Internal and external coverings shall be resistant to wear and capable of being cleaned effectively and

hygienically. They shall not crack, chip, flake, rub off or soften under normal conditions of use or during

cleaning. Detergents and disinfectants, cleaning and disinfection procedures, recommended by the

equipment manufacturer, shall be used.

Metal parts, used in the construction of equipment, shall have resistance to corrosion appropriate to

their location and function.

Internal and external coverings and insulation shall be resistant to temperature ranges intended to be

applied.

When the container is intended to be loaded with unpacked goods, the internal covering materials and

articles shall comply with further requirements for materials and articles intended to come into contact

with goods, if applicable.

The materials shall be resistant to moisture and shall neither be toxic nor contaminate the foodstuff.

Safety devices already integrated in the vehicle (for example: inside unlocking of doors, exit aids) shall

not be interfered by fitting of the insulation to the load space.
4.3 Thermal insulation
4.3.1 General
When selecting the insulating material, it shall be ensured that it:
— is odourless and resistant to uptake of odours;
— shows only moisture absorption that the selected layer material allows;
— is decay-resistant;

— shows dimensional stability in the temperature range from −40°C to +80°C and has sufficient

strength and dimensional stability for all intended ranges of application;
— has a good thermal insulation with low ageing properties.

NOTE For reasons of energy savings, maintaining the temperature of the goods during transport and

operational costs, the level of insulation of the container could take into account:

— the temperature difference between inside and outside temperature ranges which is intended to be met

during use of the container;
— the optimization of Europallet transport.

For energy savings of the cooling and/or heating devices only, not including traction energy

consumption, it is strongly recommended to choose a K-value with the following formula:

4.3.2 Seals

The doors or other openings and their frames shall be provided with sufficient seal.

When selecting the seals, it shall be ensured that:
— they are fully serviceable at temperatures between −40 °C and +80 °C;
— they shall be fitted in a way that they can be replaced;

— they can be cleaned easily and thoroughly.

The used detergents and disinfectants as well as cleaning and disinfection procedures shall not

negatively affect the seals.
4.4 Surfaces

The surface areas S and S shall be determined for the calculation of the mean surface area S .

For insulated vans the external surface area shall be considered as given in Annex D.

Tanks are calculated taking into account all geometrical surfaces areas, as cylinder, cone, partial cone

shaped and their ends, as ellipse, ovoid, torns, lone, sphere.
5 Tests for containers
5.1 General
All measuring instruments used for measurements shall be calibrated.
5.2 Requested documentation for the test

Before the test is carried out, the following documents and information shall be made available to the

test facilities:

a) drawings clearly representing the construction of the container and all its essential components;

b) description of the container, its design and construction;

c) the dimensions (internal and external dimensions, calculation of the internal and external surfaces,

wall thickness and volume);

d) the insulating material and its fixing (material, type of processing, thickness, density, coefficient of

thermal conductivity at +20 °C, blowing agent);
e) the type of external covering (material, thickness);
f) the type of internal covering (material, thickness);

g) special accessories (part floor protection, partition walls, hanging rails, double deck, lashing rails,

wheel arches, etc.);
h) number, size, location and shape of apertures;
i) the length, profile number of the seals;

j) information about the manufacturer of the insulation material and if applicable about the

assembler of the body kit, insulation kit respectively;

k) only for tanks: information about any special equipment: mounting supports, baffles, spill boxes,

venting nozzles or pipes, and their locations, etc.);
l) only for tanks: number, size and shape of manholes.

5.3 K-value measurement
5.3.1 Testing conditions

Distinction is made between containers in general and tanks during testing. The quality of the thermal

insulation of the container is tested in the steady-state conditions using the internal heating method.

The heat dissipated by the electrical resistance fan heaters shall not exceed a heat dissipation of

1 W/cm and the heater units shall be protected by a casing of low emissivity.

The air in the conditioned test room shall be continuously circulated in horizontal and longitudinal

direction so that its velocity at a distance of 100 mm ± 10 mm of the walls of the container shall be

between 1 m/s and 2 m/s, except for small container where the air is limited between 0,4 m/s and

0,6 m/s. The air velocity shall be verified in the centre of the lateral surfaces.

For determination of the internal and external temperatures the accuracy of the temperature

measurement chain shall be within ±0,3 K.

All temperature and active power consumption measurements shall be made with automatic recording

devices. All temperature sensors shall be measured at the same time (that means within a period of less

than 10 s) and the arithmetic mean shall be calculated for each recorded values. The arithmetic mean of

each individual temperature sensor shall be recorded for all intervals during a sequence of 120 s

maximum.

Electrical cable losses between the heat input measuring instrument and the tested container shall be

established by a measurement or calculation and subtracted from the total heat input measured.

Equipment for the generation and distribution of heat shall be arranged on the inside of the empty

container. The heat exchangers or electrical heating appliances shall be fitted with fans sufficient to

obtain an air flow of (60 ± 15) % times per hour related to the inner volume of the tested container, in

the case of small containers (40 ± 20) %, to ensure that a homogeneous temperature inside the

container. Each measurement involves uncertainties caused by the measurement arrangement, the

The calculated overall uncertainties shall not exceed the limits of Table 1.
5.3.2 Test procedure

The container shall be located at minimum 0,30 m from the floor. The air shall be free to circulate under

the tested container during the test.

The container shall be fitted with temperatures measuring sensors located at a distance of 100 mm

from the walls internally and externally. The number and position of temperature sensors shall be

determined, depending of the container inner volume, according to Table 2:

If the surfaces of the container are not parallel, the points of measurement for the main corners and

main surface areas shall be distributed such that it corresponds best to the actual shape.

For a compartment which is a fixed part of a container, the temperatures should be measured at the

corresponding points of this compartment.

After closing doors and hatches, the equipment for the generation and distribution of heat and the

measurement devices for determination of the heating capacity and the heat equivalent of the air-

circulating fans shall be started up.

The test shall be continued until the steady-state conditions have been verified.

After reaching the steady-state conditions, the temperature difference between the points of

measurement showing the highest and lowest temperatures shall not exceed 2 K except tanks (see C.1)

for both the external and internal air temperatures of the container and temperatures shall not vary by

more than ±1,0 K during the preceding 6 h.

The mean inside and outside temperatures from the beginning until the end of the calculation period of

at least 6 h shall not differ by more than 0,2 K.

The difference between the heating power measured over two periods of not less than 3 h at the start

and at the end of the steady-state period, and separated by at least 6 h, shall be less than 3 %.
