Overview
EN 1847:2009 - published by CEN - specifies a standardized laboratory method for exposing plastic and rubber roof waterproofing sheets to liquid chemicals (including water) by complete immersion. The standard covers specimen preparation, controlled exposure conditions, and procedures to determine resulting changes in mass, appearance and tensile properties. EN 1847:2009 is intended for product characterisation and classification (as manufactured or supplied) and is used alongside product standards such as EN 13956.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and principle: complete immersion of unrestrained test specimens in a defined quantity of test liquid for specified time and temperature; measurements before and after immersion and, where applicable, after drying.
- Test liquids: can be specific service chemicals or standard aqueous solutions (example table includes 10% NaCl, saturated milk of lime (Ca(OH)2) and 5–6% sulfurous acid); guidance refers to EN ISO 175:2000 for additional reagents.
- Temperature and duration: standard immersion temperature (23 ± 2) °C; standard comparison exposure duration is 28 days (other durations may be used if justified).
- Immersion procedure:
- Minimum test-liquid volume: ≥ 2 500 ml for specimens up to 210 × 295 mm.
- Avoid contact between specimens (≥ 10 mm initial spacing); use closed containers; control light if relevant.
- Rinse with a neutral product and wipe dry; limit air exposure for volatile liquids.
- Measurements and expression of results:
- Mass measurements: initial (M1), immediately after immersion (M2, wet) and after drying/reconditioning (M3, dry); balance accuracy to 0.001 g for specimens ≥ 1 g.
- Drying: ventilated oven at (50 ± 2) °C (typically 24 ± 1 h) to constant mass.
- Appearance: recorded on a notation scale O (none), F (slight), M (moderate), L (large); record color, opacity, gloss, crazing, blistering, tackiness, dissolution, etc.
- Tensile properties: follow EN 12311-2 for specimen dimensions and testing; report changes in strength and elongation (S3–S1, E3–E1).
- Sampling and conditioning: sampling per EN 13416; condition specimens 24 h at (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 5)% RH before testing.
Applications
- Product development & R&D: evaluate chemical compatibility and durability of roofing membranes.
- Quality control & type testing: verify batch conformity and material stability after chemical exposure.

Introduction This European Standard is intended for characterisation and /or classification of plastic and rubber sheets as manufactured or supplied before use. This test method relates exclusively to products, or to their components where appropriate, and not to waterproofing membrane systems composed of such products and installed in the works. This test is intended to be used in conjunction with EN 13956, Flexible sheet for waterproofing — Plastic and rubber sheets for roof waterproofing — Definitions and characteristics. Only testing by immersion of the entire surface of the test specimen is considered. The methods for determination of changes in properties are specified as follows: a) changes in mass immediately after immersion or after immersion and drying; b) changes in appearance immediately after immersion or after immersion and drying;
c) changes in physical properties (changes of tensile properties) immediately after immersion or after immersion and drying. Tests immediately after immersion are used when it is required to ascertain the state of the material while still acted upon by the liquid. Tests after immersion and drying are used when it is required to ascertain the state of the material after the liquid, if it is volatile, has been eliminated.
