Overview
EN ISO 18323:2015 (ISO 18323:2015) - Jewellery: Consumer confidence in the diamond industry - defines clear, consumer-facing nomenclature and disclosure principles for diamonds. Published by CEN adopting ISO 18323:2015, the standard aims to reduce consumer confusion by establishing permitted descriptors and precise definitions for natural diamonds, treated diamonds, synthetic (laboratory-grown) diamonds, composite stones and diamond imitations.
Key topics and requirements
- Permitted descriptors and nomenclature: establishes terminology designed to be easily understood by consumers and traders; the unqualified term “diamond” always means a natural diamond.
- Definitions: clear, standardized definitions for key categories, including natural, diamond, treated diamond, synthetic (laboratory-grown/created) diamond, composite stone, artificial stone and imitation (simulant).
- Disclosure obligations: requires transparent identification and disclosure of treatments and the nature/provenance of a stone so consumers can make informed purchases.
- Treatment examples: identifies treatments that must be disclosed (examples include fracture filling, coating, heating, irradiation, laser drilling, HPHT).
- Terminology controls: prohibits potentially misleading shorthand or informal abbreviations - for example, abbreviations such as “lab grown”, “lab created”, “lab diamond” or “syn diamond” are not permitted.
- Glossary and guidance: includes a consumer-oriented glossary and lists of products that might be misrepresented as diamonds (synthetic stones, other gem materials, glass, composite stones, etc.).
Practical applications
EN ISO 18323:2015 is intended for use across the diamond and jewellery supply chain to improve transparency and consumer confidence:
- Retailers and e‑commerce: for correct labeling, product descriptions and sales guidance.
- Gemmological laboratories and appraisers: to harmonize terminology in reports and certificates.
- Manufacturers and wholesalers: to standardize product descriptions for parcels and inventory.
- Regulators and consumer protection bodies: as a reference for advertising and disclosure enforcement.
- Industry associations and auditors: to develop codes of practice and compliance checks.
Related standards and context
- EN ISO 18323:2015 is the European adoption of ISO 18323:2015 prepared by ISO/TC 174 (Jewellery) and CEN/TC 410.
- It complements industry labelling guidance and gemmological standards that focus on testing, grading and authentication.

bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are

ISO 18323:2015(E)
Introduction
A diamond is a mineral; it forms and grows under natural geological processes.
The jewellery industry relies upon product integrity and transparency for consumers to have confidence
in the products that they are buying. Consumers will not always have the technical expertise to
understand the exact provenance and processing of a diamond and as a result, are reliant upon labelling
and product descriptions as well as guidance from the individual seller.
The recent development of new technologies in the diamond industry has provided consumers with
greater availability of synthetic diamonds which are produced in a factory or laboratory (see 2.4 NOTE 3).
They have essentially the same chemical composition and physical (including optical) properties as a
diamond and essentially the same crystal structure but due to the growth environment, differences in
the growth structure take place at the atomic level.
A major concern held by the diamond industry is that without clear and accurate labelling, the increased
availability of synthetic diamonds to consumers can cause confusion over exactly what type of product is
being sold to them. While the provenance and labelling of a diamond is widely understood, the consumer
will be less familiar with the variety of terms that have been used by sellers to describe synthetic dia

The EN ISO 18323:2015 standard is a critical framework designed to enhance consumer confidence in the diamond industry. This standard offers a comprehensive set of permitted descriptors that aim to clarify the complexities of diamond terminology for consumers. By providing clear nomenclature, EN ISO 18323:2015 ensures that both traders and buyers can engage with the diamond market with a shared understanding, promoting transparency and trust. One of the primary strengths of ISO 18323:2015 is its inclusive scope; it addresses various categories of diamonds, including natural, treated, synthetic, composite, and imitation diamonds. This thorough approach facilitates the accurate communication of information regarding each type of diamond, reinforcing consumer protection and aiding informed purchasing decisions. Moreover, the inclusion of definitions within the standard serves as a vital resource for traders, enhancing their understanding of the terminology used in the diamond market. This clarity is instrumental in maintaining consumer confidence, as it diminishes the potential for misunderstandings or misrepresentation in transactions. By standardizing communication across the industry, EN ISO 18323:2015 plays a significant role in cultivating an environment of trustworthiness and integrity. In conclusion, EN ISO 18323:2015 stands out as a foundational document that not only serves the diamond industry by standardizing essential nomenclature but also directly impacts consumer confidence by promoting clear and consistent communication. Its relevance in the current marketplace is underscored by the ongoing need for transparency and protection within the diamond trade.
