Steel castings - Austenitic manganese steel castings
This European Standard specifies austenitic manganese cast steels for wear-resistant service. The grades
covered by this European Standard will experience maximum service life in applications where the surface of
the casting is subject to impact.
This European Standard retains the same format for clauses as EN 1559-1 and EN 1559-2. It shall be used in
conjunction with these standards. Where no text is given under a clause heading, the corresponding clause
of EN 1559-1 or EN 1559-2 applies.
The structure of this standard is as follows:
a) clauses and subclauses preceded by Ø indicates no additional conditions to Part 1 or Part 2 1 )
of EN 1559;
b) subclauses without any marking are mandatory.
Stahlguss - Austenitischer Manganstahlguss
oder EN 1559-21) keine zusätzlichen Bedingungen gibt;
par rapport à l’EN 1559-11) ou à l’EN 1559-21) ;
General Information
Overview
EN 10349:2009 - Steel castings - Austenitic manganese steel castings (CEN) defines the specification for austenitic manganese cast steels intended for wear‑resistant, impact‑subject applications. The standard is intended to be used together with EN 1559-1 and EN 1559-2, retaining their clause format and adding steel‑grade‑specific requirements (chemical composition, heat treatment options, mechanical testing and inspection rules).
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and purpose: Grades covered are optimized for maximum service life where surfaces are subject to impact and high wear.
- Grade designations and chemistry: The standard lists specific grades (for example GX120MnMo7-1, GX110MnMo13-1, GX100Mn13a, GX90MnMo14, GX120MnCr13-2, GX120MnNi13-3, GX120Mn18a, GX120MnCr18-2) with cast‑analysis chemical composition limits for C, Si, Mn, P, S, Cr, Mo, Ni.
- Heat treatment rules: Solution treatment and water quenching are required for many grades. Exception: GX90MnMo14 may be supplied without heat treatment when thickness < 45 mm and carbon < 0.8 %; for thickness ≥ 45 mm or C ≥ 0.8 % (and for other grades) solution treatment at ≥ 1 040 °C and water quench is required.
- Mechanical testing:
- Bend test per EN ISO 7438: specimen must bend to 150° at room temperature (23 ± 5 °C) without breaking into two pieces; surface cracks that do not separate the piece are acceptable.
- Brinell hardness per EN ISO 6506‑1: maximum hardness normally 300 HBW unless otherwise agreed; hardness testing may be required after heat treatment and before machining.
- Microstructure and other tests may be performed when agreed between purchaser and manufacturer.
- Inspection & documentation: Inspection types, sampling, submission and acceptance conditions are covered. Place and timing of testing are agreed between purchaser and manufacturer.
- Supplementary provisions: Purchaser can invoke additional requirements from EN 1559 parts or agreed bespoke supplementary requirements.
Applications and practical value
EN 10349 is targeted at components exposed to severe impact and abrasion, such as:
- crusher liners, hammers and wear plates
- earthmoving and excavation parts
- mining and quarry equipment
- rail crossing and impact zones where austenitic manganese castings provide work‑hardening, high toughness and extended wear life
Using EN 10349 ensures material traceability, reproducible chemical and mechanical properties, and consistent acceptance/testing criteria for long‑life, wear‑resistant castings.
Related standards and users
- Related: EN 1559-1, EN 1559-2, EN ISO 6506-1, EN ISO 7438.
- Typical users: foundries, material engineers, specifiers, procurement teams, OEMs and end‑users in mining, aggregate processing, construction and heavy machinery industries.
