Irrigation techniques - Localised irrigation - Emitting devices, characteristics and test methods

This standard specifies the hydraulic and mechanical features necessary for defining the functioning of the emitting devices, whether or not equipped with compensating features, designed for use in localised irrigation systems.
The manner in which the manufacturers shall provide the basic engineering information for the design and use of the localised irrigation systems and the appropriate testing methods for checking and assuring the proper working order thereof are specified.
This standard applies to all the emitting devices listed in EN 13635:2001, 3.1, with the following restrictions:
- Micro-sprinklers, micro-sprayers or micro-jets are dealt with solely as components which aim is to wet a predetermined restricted area
   - Porous pipes are not included under this standard as a result of deeming the hydraulic features thereof to differ from the rest of the emitting devices.
   - Other devices such as misters, the essential function of which is that of creating a moist atmosphere more than watering as such, are not included.

-   Kleinregner, Kleinsprüher oder Kleinstrahlrohre werden lediglich als Bestandteile behandelt, deren Ziel es ist, eine vorbestimmte begrenzte Fläche zu befeuchten;
-   Poröse Rohre werden in dieser Norm nicht behandelt, da deren hydraulischen Eigenschaften als unterschiedlich zu denen der restlichen Auslässe betrachtet werden;
Andere Einrichtungen wie Nebelerzeuger, deren wesentliche Funktion eher die Erzeugung einer feuchten Atmosphäre als die Bewässerung ist, sind ausgeschlossen.

Overview

prEN 15098 (CEN draft) defines the hydraulic and mechanical features and test methods required to specify the functioning of emitting devices used in localised irrigation systems. The standard sets out how manufacturers must provide the basic engineering data for system design and the appropriate verification tests to assure correct operation. It applies to the device families listed in EN 13635:2001 with specific exclusions (porous pipes and devices intended to create a moist atmosphere rather than irrigate).

Key Topics

  • Scope and classification: Covers drip devices, emitting pipes and tapes, sprayers and micro‑sprinklers as components for wetting a restricted area. Excludes porous pipes and misters.
  • Materials and manufacture: Emphasis on UV resistance, corrosion and abrasion resistance, and minimising biological build‑up. Manufacturer declarations of any restrictions are required.
  • Connections and assembly: Requirements for compatibility with PE piping and standard threads (ISO 7‑1) and demands for interchangeability and accessibility of removable parts.
  • Design feature tests: Visual inspection criteria (no cracks, pores, or defects) and dimensional checks for emitting pipes per ISO 9261.
  • Hydraulic tests: Uniformity of emission, emission rate versus inlet pressure (q = k · p^m), and wetted radius procedures for micro‑sprinklers and sprayers (including wind limit and collector layout).
  • Mechanical tests: Tightness and integrity testing after assembly/disassembly cycles and environmental stress cracking tests for emitting pipes (bend or spigot procedures depending on wall thickness).
  • Identification and marking: Mandatory marking elements such as manufacturer name, rated flowrate, maximum working pressure and catalogue references, plus roll labels and directional arrows when needed.

Applications

prEN 15098 is practical for:

  • Manufacturers of emitting devices and emitting pipes who need to supply compliant design data and labelling.
  • Product engineers and test laboratories performing hydraulic and mechanical verification (uniformity, emission/pressure characteristics, tightness, stress cracking).
  • Irrigation system designers seeking reliable specifications for localised irrigation components to ensure predictable performance and easier quality assurance during installation and maintenance.

Benefits include clearer manufacturer guidance, enhanced system reliability, easier product selection and improved interchangeability of parts.

Related Standards

  • EN 13635:2001 - Terminology and data to be supplied by the manufacturer
  • ISO 9261:2004 - Emitters and emitting pipe specification and test methods
  • ISO 8796:2004 - PE pipes for irrigation laterals (stress cracking tests)
  • ISO 7‑1 and ISO 8026 - Threading and general sprayer requirements

By aligning device design, testing and marking with prEN 15098, stakeholders can reduce installation risk, improve performance predictability and simplify quality control for localised irrigation systems.
