Overview
EN ISO 8623:2015 (ISO 8623:2015) specifies test methods and provides characteristic values for distilled tall‑oil fatty acids used in paints and varnishes. It is a CEN-endorsed European standard that replaces earlier editions and focuses on standardized laboratory procedures and typical property limits used for quality control and material specification of tall‑oil fatty acids in coating applications.
Key topics
The standard defines test methods and typical characteristic values for the following properties (with their referenced test methods):
- Density
- 20 °C: 0.900–0.910 g·cm⁻3 (ISO 2811)
- 23 °C: 0.898–0.908 g·cm⁻3 (ISO 2811)
- Colour: max. 5 (Gardner scale, ISO 4630)
- Acid value: min. 192 mg KOH/g (ISO 2114)
- Saponification value: min. 193 mg KOH/g (ISO 3681)
- Iodine value: min. 125 g Iodine/100 g (ISO 3961)
- Unsaponifiable matter: max. 5% (mass fraction) - Determination via the diethyl ether method given in Annex A
- Rosin acid content: max. 2.5% (mass fraction) - Determination method provided in Annex B
Annex A (normative) details the diethyl‑ether extraction procedure for measuring unsaponifiable matter; Annex B (normative) describes the butanol‑sulfuric acid esterification and titration procedure to quantify rosin acids (expressed as abietic acid).
Applications
EN ISO 8623:2015 is primarily used for:
- Quality control of incoming tall‑oil fatty acid raw materials for coatings manufacturers
- Supplier specification and acceptance testing in procurement contracts
- Formulation and R&D when selecting or comparing tall‑oil fatty acids for paints, varnishes and related binders
- Laboratory testing in independent QC and certification labs to ensure consistency with industry characteristic values
- Regulatory and conformity assessment where standardized test data are required
Typical users include coatings formulators, raw‑material producers, QA/QC laboratories, procurement specialists, and standards/technical compliance teams.
Related standards
EN ISO 8623:2015 references several normative standards used for individual test procedures and laboratory practice, including:
- ISO 2114 (acid value)
- ISO 2811 (density)
- ISO 3681 (saponification value)
- ISO 3961 (iodine value)
- ISO 4630 (Gardner colour)
- ISO 3696 (water for laboratory use)
- ISO 383 (glassware joints)
These cross‑references ensure harmonized, reproducible test methods for tall‑oil fatty acids in the coatings industry.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights. Details of
any patent rights identified during the development of the document will be in the Introduction and/or
on the ISO list of patent declarations received (see www.iso.org/patents).

Test methods for binders for paints and varnishes.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 8623:1997), which has been technically
revised with the following changes:
— the former requirements were changed to information on characteristic values;
— the data for unsaponifiable matter content was changed from mass fraction of max. 2,5 % to max. 5 %;
— the method for the determination of the unsaponifiable matter (diethyl ether method) was
implemented from the 1980 edition of ISO 150 because it is no longer included in the actual revision
of ISO 150, i.e. ISO 150:2006;
— the concentration of phenolphthalein indicator solution was changed from 10 g/l in ethanol to 5 g/l
in ethanol or in a 1:1 ethanol/water mixture.

Introduction
Normally, requirements are agreed between the interested parties. So with this new edition, this
International Standard no longer specifies requirements but only test methods and gives information
on characteristic values for tall-oil fatty acids.
