¾ un système automatique de détection d'incendie ;
¾ un dispositif de commande électrique ;
¾ un détecteur spécial d'incendie non électrique ;

Overview

EN 12094-2:2003 is a CEN European Standard for fixed firefighting systems that defines requirements and test methods for non‑electrical automatic control and delay devices used in gas extinguishing systems (CO2, inert gas and halo‑carbon gas). The standard covers devices powered mechanically, pneumatically, or by a combination, and applies whether devices are triggered by an automatic fire detection system, an electrical control device, a non‑electrical special fire detector, manual actuation, or combinations of these.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and definitions: Terms such as control device, delay device, system delay (for alarm and discharge), activated/stand‑by/disabled conditions are defined to ensure consistent interpretation.
  • Design and construction: General design, connection threads and enclosure protection (IP code references) are specified to ensure mechanical compatibility and safety.
  • Power and actuation: Requirements for devices using pneumatic or mechanical energy supplies, including pilot containers and actuators.
  • Signal processing and indication: Non‑electrical signal processing, status indication and interfaces to detectors and manual triggers.
  • Timing and delays: System delay requirements and test methods for pre‑warning and discharge timing (system delay for alarm and discharge).
  • Environmental and mechanical testing: Prescribed test methods include temperature performance, internal pressure, strength, vibration, corrosion and stress corrosion resistance, and sulphur dioxide exposure for connections.
  • Operational and functional reliability: Tests for operational reliability, functional reliability and operating force under specified conditions.
  • Marking, documentation and conformity: Requirements for marking, user data, initial type testing, factory production control (FPC) and conformity evaluation - supporting CE/Construction Products Directive compliance where applicable.

Applications and who uses it

  • Manufacturers of non‑electrical control and delay components for CO2, inert gas and halocarbon gas extinguishing systems use EN 12094-2:2003 to design and test products to accepted European criteria.
  • System designers and installers reference the standard when specifying compatible non‑electrical control devices (mechanical/pneumatic) and verifying system delays and interfaces with detectors and manual triggers.
  • Test laboratories and conformity assessors follow the listed test methods for type testing and factory production control.
  • Facility managers and safety engineers rely on compliant components to ensure reliable gas suppression release sequences and documented performance.
