Section 23: Extra low voltage lighting systems

FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization
comprising all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to
promote international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic
fields. To this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt
with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations
liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC collaborates closely with the International
Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the
two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters, express as nearly as possible, an
international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation
from all interested National Committees.
3) The documents produced have the form of recommendations for international use and are published in the
form of standards, technical reports or guides and they are accepted by the National Committees in that
sense.
4)
In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International
Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly
indicated in the latter.
5) The IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
equipment declared to be in conformity with one of its standards.
6) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be the
subject of patent rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
International Standard IEC 598-2-23 has been prepared by sub-committee 34D: Luminaires, of
IEC technical committee 34: Lamps and related equipment.
The text of this standard is based on the following documents:
FDIS Report on voting

Full information on the voting for the approval of this standard can be found in the report on
voting indicated in the above table.
This publication shall be read in conjunction with IEC 598-1: Luminaires — Part 1: General
requirements and tests.

Section 23: Extra low voltage lighting systems
for filament lamps
23.1 Scope
This section of IEC 598-2 specifies requirements for extra low voltage lighting systems for
filament lamps intended for ordinary interior use on supply voltages not exceeding 1 000 V.
The luminaires, being connected in parallel, are supplied via freely suspended continuous
supporting conductors or profiles. The current in the output circuit of the system is limited
to 25 A.
23.2 Normative references
The following normative documents contain provisions which, through reference in this text,
constitute provisions of this section of IEC 598-2. At the time of publication, the editions
indicated were valid. All normative documents are subject to revision, and parties to
agreements based on this section of IEC 598-2 are encouraged to investigate the possibility of
applying the most recent editions of the normative documents indicated below. Members of IEC
and ISO maintain registers of currently valid International Standards.

23.3 General test requirements
The provisions of section 0 of IEC 598-1 apply. The tests described in each appropriate section
of Part 1 shall be carried out in the order listed in this section of Part 2.
Type tests shall be carried out on the complete extra low voltage lighting system as provided
by the manufacturer.

23.4 Definitions
For the purpose of this section, the definitions of section 1 of IEC 598-1 apply, together with
the following definitions (see figure 1).
23.4.1
extra low voltage lighting system: Lighting system in kit form for filament lamps
consisting of a transformer/convertor, supporting conductors and luminaires, as well as all the
necessary fixing devices and the electrical/mechanical connectors.
23.4.2 supporting conductor: Conductive span wire or profile freely spanned or mounted
between the main points of support, serving to supply the luminaires, and carrying the mass of
the luminaires of the extra low voltage lighting system.
23.4.3 main support:
Device ensuring a sufficient mechanical connection of the supporting
conductor(s) with the appropriate parts of the building in which the extra low voltage lighting
system is to be used. Auxiliary supports may be necessary between the main supports.
23.4.4 auxiliary support: Device along the supporting conductor to hold it in its intended
position.
23.4.5 spacer: Device maintaining the supporting conductors at the intended separation
distance.
23.4.6 connector for supporting conductor: Component for connecting electrically the
supporting conductor(s) to the transformer/convertor.
23.4.7 luminaire connector: Component for connecting electrically and mechanically the
luminaire
to the supporting conductor.
23.4.8 input winding (of the transformer): Winding which is connected to the mains supply.
23.4.9 input of the converter: Termination of the converter connected to the supply.
23.4.10 output winding (of the transformer): Winding(s) to which the connector(s) for the
supporting conductor is(are) connected.
23.4.11 output of the converter: Termination(s) to which the connector(s) for supporting
conductor is(are) connected.
