ISO 11117:2019/Amd 1:2026 - Gas cylinders — Valve protection caps and guards — Design, construction and tests — Amendment 1
ISO 11117:2019/Amd 1:2026 - Bouteilles à gaz — Chapeaux fermés et chapeaux ouverts de protection des robinets — Conception, construction et essais — Amendement 1
ISO 11117:2019/Amd 1 is an ISO amendment to ISO 11117:2019 for gas cylinders - valve protection caps and guards - design, construction and tests. It updates specific design, dimensional and evaluation text for valve protection caps and valve guards, with a focus on North American thread details and when further testing is needed after valve changes.
What does ISO 11117:2019/Amd 1 specify?
ISO 11117:2019/Amd 1 specifies changes to the existing ISO 11117:2019 requirements for valve protection caps and valve guards. It is an amendment document, so it revises selected clauses rather than restating the full standard.
The amendment touches the following parts of the base document:
| Affected part | What it changes |
|---|---|
| 4.3, Figure 5 | Replaces the figure for typical North American thread profiles |
| 4.3, Table 3 | Replaces the dimensions for typical North American threads |
| 4.3, Table 4 | Replaces the tolerances for those threads |
| 7.1 | Clarifies how maximum dimensions and maximum dimensional envelope are referenced |
| 7.2 e) 2) | Expands what is meant by the dimensional envelope for valve guards |
| 7.7.8 | Revises when changes to the valve or valve guard need further evaluation |
| 7.7.9 | Revises when additional valve changes need further evaluation |
| Clause 9 | Removes items b) and c) and renumbers the list |
In practice, this means the amendment is mainly about thread data, drawing/specification detail, and the decision logic for repeating the drop test.
What are the key requirements of ISO 11117:2019/Amd 1?
ISO 11117:2019/Amd 1 changes the technical basis for specifying and checking valve protection caps and valve guards. The most important updates are about thread dimensions, how valve guards are described, and when a changed design needs another evaluation.
Thread details for North American designs
Clause 4.3 replaces Figure 5 and Tables 3 and 4 for typical North American threads. Table 3 gives the thread dimensions in millimetres, and Table 4 gives the tolerances for those same threads.
For users, this matters when drawing, machining, or checking parts. The cap or guard thread has to fit the cylinder neck ring thread, so the updated dimensions and tolerances are the reference for compatibility.
How valve guards are described
Clause 7.1 now refers to either maximum dimensions or a maximum dimensional envelope. Clause 7.2 e) 2) says the dimensional envelope for valve guards must include external dimensions, at least L and R, and the arrangement of physical features.
In practice, a simple size statement is not enough for a valve guard. Designers and approvers need enough external geometry information, including feature arrangement, to judge the protected space.
When further evaluation is needed
Clause 7.7.8 states that changes to the valve design, such as material, connections or handwheel, do not require further evaluation for valve protection caps and valve guards. For valve guards, however, adding or changing the position, arrangement or orientation of physical features of the protected valve can trigger further evaluation to decide whether the drop test must be repeated.
Clause 7.7.9 uses the same logic for additional valve design changes. If those changes affect features such as material, connections, handwheel or feature layout, the document requires further evaluation before deciding on another drop test.
For users, this is the practical decision point: not every valve change automatically means retesting, but changes that affect the protection behavior may.
Clause 9 housekeeping change
Clause 9 removes items b) and c) and updates the numbering of the list that follows.
Who uses ISO 11117:2019/Amd 1?
ISO 11117:2019/Amd 1 is used by people who design, manufacture, test, approve or buy gas cylinder valve protection caps and valve guards. It is especially relevant to:
- gas cylinder and fitting manufacturers
- design engineers working on caps, guards and thread interfaces
- test laboratories carrying out drop testing and dimensional checks
- quality and certification staff reviewing conformity evidence
- buyers specifying protected valve hardware for gas cylinders
These users need the amendment when they work with the updated North American thread data or when they decide whether a design change requires repeat evaluation.
What changed in ISO 11117:2019/Amd 1 from the previous edition?
ISO 11117:2019/Amd 1 is Amendment 1 to ISO 11117:2019. The stated changes are the replacement of Figure 5, Tables 3 and 4, the clarification of maximum dimensions and dimensional envelope language, revised evaluation text in 7.7.8 and 7.7.9, and removal of items b) and c) from clause 9.
What does the ISO 11117:2019/Amd 1 document contain?
ISO 11117:2019/Amd 1 contains one replaced figure, two replaced tables, revised clause wording, and a clause 9 numbering update. The figure and tables provide the North American thread profiles, dimensions and tolerances used for valve protection caps, valve guards and cylinder neck rings.
The wording changes in clause 7 help users document the geometry of valve guards more precisely and decide when a modified valve needs further evaluation. The amended text also links that decision to whether the drop test must be repeated.
For engineers and test teams, the document is mainly a change-control reference. It is used when updating drawings, checking fit, preparing test evidence, or reviewing whether a change to the valve or guard affects the previous test result.
