Overview
SIST EN ISO 10087:2022/A1:2026 is an amendment to the international standard ISO 10087:2022, focusing on the identification of small craft through a standardized coding system. Published by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST), this updated amendment provides refinements and additional guidance for the structure and assignment of craft identification numbers (CINs) for small boats and watercraft. The amendment supports regulatory harmonization and helps ensure consistent application across manufacturers, authorities, and inspection organizations.
Key Topics
- Craft Identification Number Structure: Defines the required unique combination of 14 consecutive characters plus a hyphen, with no extra spaces, dashes, or slashes in the registration code.
- Manufacturer’s Identification Code: Details the use of a three-character code, assigned by a national authority or recognized organization, that excludes the numerals '0' and '1' to prevent confusion or misinterpretation.
- Craft Serial Numbering: Specifies five-character serial numbers for each individual small craft, prohibiting the letters 'I', 'O', and 'Q' to avoid potential ambiguity.
- Correction Requirements: Stipulates that if an error in the craft identification number is discovered, both the visible and hidden CINs on the craft must be properly corrected by the manufacturer, ensuring traceability and compliance.
- Updates to Clauses: The amendment brings updates to Clauses 4.1, 4.3, and 4.4, and introduces a new subclause 5.2.1, simplifying the processes for assigning and rectifying identification numbers.
Applications
The SIST EN ISO 10087:2022/A1:2026 standard is directly relevant to:
- Small Craft Manufacturers: Provides guidelines for assigning, marking, and correcting official identification numbers to ensure each vessel can be uniquely identified worldwide.
- National Authorities & Regulatory Bodies: Outlines rules for allocating manufacturer codes and overseeing compliance with craft identification requirements.
- Recognized Organizations: Supports third-party entities authorized to assign identification codes and perform inspections or certifications.
- Inspectors & Surveyors: Ensures standards are uniformly applied during compliance checks, making craft identification straightforward and reliable.
- Importers & Distributors: Assists in verifying the correct application of craft coding standards to maintain traceability and ensure products meet European and international legal requirements.
These applications help ensure craft traceability, regulatory compliance, anti-theft measures, and safety for recreational and commercial small vessels. The amendment makes it easier for stakeholders to implement the coding system correctly and efficiently.
Related Standards
For enhanced implementation and broader context, the following standards and regulatory frameworks are relevant:
- ISO 10087:2022 - Small craft – Craft identification – Coding system: The core standard setting out the global best practices for small craft identification, to which this amendment applies.
- EN ISO 10087 Series: European adaptations of the international standard, mandating similar craft identification measures within the EU.
- ISO/TC 188 Standards: Covering additional requirements for small craft safety, construction, and testing.
- National Regulations: Country-specific rules for watercraft registration and identification, often referencing or incorporating ISO 10087.
- ICS 47.080: The International Classification for Standards category relevant to small craft, providing a framework for all related safety and technical documentation.
By adopting SIST EN ISO 10087:2022/A1:2026, organizations align with the latest requirements in craft identification, supporting global trade, legal compliance, and industry best practices for small craft.
