SIST EN IEC 60255-26:2025/oprA1:2026 is the Slovenian adoption of the IEC amendment for measuring relays and protection equipment, focused on electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements. It updates the EMC test approach for the ports and functions used in relays and protection equipment, so manufacturers, test laboratories, and purchasers can check the same behavior against the same rules.

What does SIST EN IEC 60255-26:2025/oprA1:2026 specify?

SIST EN IEC 60255-26:2025/oprA1:2026 specifies amendments to the EMC requirements for measuring relays and protection equipment. It refines definitions, emission limits, immunity test methods, and acceptance criteria for the different ports used on this equipment.

The document is organized into terms and definitions, emission requirements, immunity requirements by port type, overall immunity acceptance criteria, and annexes for special test information. The main technical content is in the emission clauses, the detailed immunity tables in Clause 7.3, and the acceptance criteria in Clause 8.2.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex APower frequency immunity tests on binary inputs
Annex BBackground information for power frequency tests
Annex CBackground information for the spot frequency test

What are the key requirements of SIST EN IEC 60255-26:2025/oprA1:2026?

Emission requirements

Clause 5.1 updates the radiated emission table. Measuring relays and protection equipment are treated as apparatus that meet class A limits, and the table gives the emission tests for the enclosure port across frequency ranges below and above 1 GHz. In practice, this tells a manufacturer which emission method, distance and limit set to use when proving the enclosure does not radiate excessively.

Clause 5.2 adds a specific note for conducted emission: no conducted emission requirements apply to DC power output ports in conjunction with CISPR H standards. This matters because it removes a conducted-emission check for that port combination, so test plans do not need to treat it as a required emission case.

Immunity requirements by port type

Clause 6.3 sets immunity tests for signal/control and wired network ports, including conducted disturbance, electrical fast transient/burst, damped oscillatory waves, and surge. Clause 6.4 does the same for input, output and DC power output ports, and also adds the power frequency test for binary input ports that register DC or both AC and DC voltages. In practice, a test house needs to match each port type with the correct coupling method, test level and acceptance rule.

Clause 6.5 covers the earth port and states that multiple earth ports shall be tested separately. That is important for devices with more than one protective or functional earth connection, because each earth path must be checked on its own.

Clause 7.3.2 through 7.3.12 gives the detailed test procedures for:

  • electrostatic discharge
  • radiated electromagnetic field immunity
  • electrical fast transient/burst
  • damped oscillatory waves
  • surge
  • conducted RF immunity
  • power frequency magnetic field immunity
  • voltage dips and short interruptions
  • ripple on DC input power port
  • gradual shutdown and start-up tests

These tables matter because they set the test setup, dwell time, coupling method, repetition pattern, and port selection rules. They also distinguish between AC and DC supply cases, and between lowest and highest rated values where the relay is intended to work over a range.

Special port and application rules

The amendment adds and updates several port-related rules. The electrical fast transient/burst, damped oscillatory wave, surge and conducted RF tables now include DC power output ports in the coupling methods, and several tables add analogue input signal ports. The document also makes clear when a test is not applied, such as for some ports with permanently connected short cables under the stated length conditions.

For radiated immunity and conducted RF immunity, the spot-frequency procedures require the relay to be driven from test reference conditions into the operated state and back again while the field or RF signal is held. In practical terms, this checks not only whether the relay survives the disturbance, but whether it still picks up and returns correctly during the disturbance.

Acceptance criteria

Clause 8.2 revises the immunity acceptance criteria table. It ties the acceptable behavior to the function being tested, including protection, command and control, measurement, analogue output port, DC power output port, human-machine interface, data communication, binary input port, binary output port and output contacts.

The most important practical point is that protection functions are expected to remain within specification limits, including pick-up signals, while other functions may be allowed temporary degradation or temporary loss depending on the chosen criterion. If a manufacturer uses a degradation specification of its own, that specification must be included in the product documentation available to the user.

What terms does SIST EN IEC 60255-26:2025/oprA1:2026 define?

  • Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) - the ability of equipment to operate correctly in its electromagnetic environment without causing unacceptable interference.
  • DC power output port - an output port of a DC power supply interface used to energize auxiliary equipment, not to communicate with it.
  • Analogue input signal port - an input signal port with a value directly proportional to a measured physical quantity, with the voltage and current limits given in the definition.
  • Pick-up signal - an output signal that asserts when a measuring relay or protection equipment starts to pick up.

Who uses SIST EN IEC 60255-26:2025/oprA1:2026?

SIST EN IEC 60255-26:2025/oprA1:2026 is used by manufacturers of measuring relays and protection equipment, EMC test laboratories, and conformity assessment bodies. It is also relevant to engineers and quality managers who need to define or verify EMC test plans, port definitions, and acceptance criteria for products used in electricity transmission and distribution.

The document is useful when designing a relay, planning type tests, preparing a test report, or checking whether a product’s declared settings and port behavior match the EMC expectations in the standard.

What changed in SIST EN IEC 60255-26:2025/oprA1:2026 from the previous edition?

This amendment is prepared against IEC 60255-26:2023. The changes stated in the document include:

  • a replacement figure in Clause 3.1.23
  • new definitions for DC power output port, analogue input signal port, and pick-up signal
  • a note that no conducted emission requirements apply to DC power output ports in conjunction with CISPR H standards
  • corrected radiated emission content above 1 GHz
  • updated immunity tables for signal/control and wired network ports, input/output/DC power output ports, earth ports, radiated field tests, EFT, damped oscillatory waves, surge, conducted RF, power frequency magnetic field, voltage dips and short interruptions, ripple on DC input power port, and gradual shutdown/start-up
  • revised immunity acceptance criteria in Clause 8.2
  • an updated Annex A figure and capacitor value in Figure A.3

Which standards are used with SIST EN IEC 60255-26:2025/oprA1:2026?

The amendment relies on several external test standards and reference documents named in the tables and annexes:

  • IEC 61000-4-2 - electrostatic discharge immunity test method
  • IEC 61000-4-3 - radiated RF field immunity test method
  • IEC 61000-4-4 - electrical fast transient/burst test method
  • IEC 61000-4-5 - surge immunity test method
  • IEC 61000-4-6 - conducted RF immunity test method
  • IEC 61000-4-8 - power frequency magnetic field immunity test method
  • IEC 61000-4-11 and IEC 61000-4-29 - voltage dips and short interruptions test methods
  • IEC 61000-4-16 - ripple on DC input power port immunity test method
  • IEC 61000-4-17 - gradual shutdown and start-up test method
  • IEC 61000-4-18 - damped oscillatory wave immunity test method
  • IEC 60050-447:2020-05 - source for the modified definition of analogue input signal port
  • CISPR 11 and CISPR 32 - the emission test references used for radiated emission limits

What does the SIST EN IEC 60255-26:2025/oprA1:2026 document contain?

The document contains revised emission tables, detailed immunity test procedures, acceptance criteria by function, and annexes with supporting information for binary input power-frequency testing and spot-frequency testing. It also includes specific test set-up instructions such as mounting conditions, coupling methods, dwell times, polarity application, and which ports must be tested together or separately.

It is written as a technical test and verification document rather than a general overview. For practical use, the most important parts are the port-specific test tables, the acceptance criteria table, and Annex A to Annex C, which support how to run and interpret the tests.

10 FOREWORD
11 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
12 all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
13 co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
14 in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
15 Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
16 preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
17 may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
18 with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
19 Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
20 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
21 consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
22 interested IEC National Committees.
23 3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
24 Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
25 Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
26 misinterpretation by any end user.
27 4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
28 transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
29 any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.

31 assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
32 services carried out by independent certification bodies.
33 6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
34 7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
35 members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
36 other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
37 expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
38 Publications.
39 8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
40 indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
41 9) IEC draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use of (a)
42 patent(s). IEC takes no position concerning the evidence, validity or applicability of any claimed patent rights in
43 respect thereof. As of the date of publication of this document, IEC had not received notice of (a) patent(s), which
44 may be required to implement this document. However, implementers are cautioned that this may not represent
45 the latest information, which may be obtained from the patent database available at https://patents.iec.ch. IEC

1 INTERNATIONAL ELECTROTECHNICAL COMMISSION
2 ____________
4 MEASURING RELAYS AND PROTECTION EQUIPMENT –
6 Part 26: Electromagnetic compatibility requirements
8 AMENDMENT 1
30 5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
IEC
46 shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
