Electrical insulating materials - Thermal endurance properties -- Part 4-2: Ageing ovens - Precision ovens for use up to 300 °C

Covers minimum performance requirements for ventilated and electrically heated precision ovens for thermal endurance evaluation of electrical insulating materials and other appropriate applications. It covers ovens designed to operate over all or part of the temperature range from 20 K above room temperature up to 300°C. Two possible methods of achieving the required performance are described: a) where the required performance is achieved by precise control of temperature in a simple single chamber oven, i.e., upgraded versions of ovens conforming to HD 611.4.1 and, otherwise b)where the required performance is achieved by utilizing a second chamber (iso-box), mounted within the chamber of a single-chamber oven, the purpose of which is to reduce the magnitude of any temperature changes to an acceptable level whilst maintaining the required levels of air changes and circulation.

Overview

EN 60216-4-2:2000 (published by CLC) specifies minimum performance requirements for ventilated, electrically heated precision ovens used for thermal endurance evaluation of electrical insulating materials and related applications. The standard covers ovens designed to operate across part or all of the range from 20 K above room temperature up to 300 °C. It is aligned with IEC 60216-4-2:2000 and describes two practical design approaches to achieve the required thermal performance for ageing tests.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and purpose: Defines minimum performance criteria for ovens used in thermal ageing (endurance) testing of insulating materials.
  • Temperature range: Covers ovens intended to work from about 20 K above ambient temperature up to 300 °C.
  • Design approaches:
    • Single-chamber precision control - improved, ventilated single-chamber ovens with precise temperature control (upgraded versions of ovens conforming to HD 611.4.1).
    • Iso-box (dual-chamber) - a secondary chamber mounted inside a single-chamber oven to smooth temperature variations while preserving specified air changes and circulation.
  • Air changes and circulation: Performance criteria include maintaining required airflow, uniform circulation and ventilation for reproducible ageing conditions.
  • Minimum performance requirements: Specifies the functional expectations (e.g., stability, uniformity and reduced temperature transients) needed to produce reliable thermal endurance test results.
  • Applicability: Addresses electrically heated, ventilated precision ovens suitable for accelerated ageing and endurance testing of insulating materials.

Applications and who uses it

  • Test laboratories and calibration facilities performing thermal endurance and accelerated ageing tests on electrical insulating materials.
  • Material manufacturers and R&D teams verifying thermal stability and lifetime characteristics of polymers, varnishes, tapes and other insulating products.
  • Quality assurance and compliance engineers who need to select or qualify ageing ovens for reproducible test conditions.
  • Equipment suppliers and OEMs designing or specifying precision ovens for electrical material testing and related high-temperature applications.

Related standards

  • IEC 60216-4-2:2000 - the international counterpart referenced by EN 60216-4-2.
  • HD 611.4.1 - referenced as the baseline for single-chamber oven improvements.

EN 60216-4-2 is essential for ensuring that ageing ovens used in thermal endurance testing deliver repeatable, controlled temperature environments and consistent airflow, supporting reliable evaluation of insulating materials up to 300 °C.
