Overview

SIST EN 16256-4:2013 is a European Standard developed by CEN that specifies the minimum labelling requirements and instructions for use of theatrical pyrotechnic articles. These articles, commonly used in theatres, stage productions, and studio settings, require precise and standardized labelling to ensure safety, traceability, and correct handling. The standard applies specifically to the generic types of pyrotechnic articles defined in EN 16256-1:2012, ensuring harmonized compliance throughout the EU and associated countries.

This standard ensures that all theatrical pyrotechnic articles are clearly marked with essential information that supports safe use, facilitates regulatory compliance, and promotes informed handling by users, including operators and specialized technicians.

Key Topics

  • Minimum Labelling Requirements
Labels must include mandatory details such as:

    • Manufacturer or importer’s name and address
    • The word “Pyrotechnic” and clear article type designation
    • Category and registration number for traceability
    • Net explosive content (NEC)
    • CE marking with notified body number
    • Minimum age limits and safety distances based on product category
    • Clear, legible printing on contrasting backgrounds, with minimum font sizes
  • Instructions for Use
The standard mandates that manufacturers provide detailed instructions covering:

    • Safe operating procedures
    • Handling and storage guidance
    • Misfire protocols
    • Disposal methods

Instructions must be provided in the official language(s) of the country where the articles are marketed.

  • Safety Information
Specific labelling requirements depend on the article category:

    • Category T1 articles require minimum age limits and safety distances stated clearly on the label.
    • Category T2 articles must include more detailed user information, such as effect distance, sound pressure level, hazardous debris distance, and additional safety parameters.
  • Marking Small Articles
For pyrotechnic articles too small for full labelling, minimal critical information such as CE mark, registration number, and generic type must be present on the article itself, with full information provided on the packaging.

Applications

SIST EN 16256-4:2013 serves as a vital guideline for manufacturers, importers, distributors, and users of theatrical pyrotechnic articles within Europe. Its practical applications include:

  • Theatrical Productions: Ensures safe and standardized use of pyrotechnics on stage, protecting performers, staff, and audiences.
  • Film and Television Studios: Facilitates compliance with safety regulations when using pyrotechnics in controlled environments.
  • Manufacturing and Import Compliance: Guides companies in creating legally compliant labels and user instructions, supporting market access in the EU.
  • Safety Training and Certification: Provides clear parameters and terminology for training operators and safety officers dealing with theatrical pyrotechnics.
  • Regulatory Enforcement: Assists national authorities in verifying compliance with EU Directive 2007/23/EC concerning pyrotechnic articles.

By following EN 16256-4, users can better understand operational parameters and safety distances, minimizing accident risks and ensuring proper handling and disposal.

Related Standards

SIST EN 16256-4:2013 is part of a comprehensive suite dedicated to theatrical pyrotechnic articles. It works alongside:

  • EN 16256-1:2012 – Terminology for theatrical pyrotechnic articles
  • EN 16256-2:2012 – Categories of theatrical pyrotechnic articles
  • EN 16256-3:2012 – Requirements for construction and performance
  • EN 16256-5:2012 – Test methods for theatrical pyrotechnics

These interrelated standards support consistent safety and quality management across the pyrothechnic product lifecycle. Additionally, EN 16256-4 supports compliance with EU Directive 2007/23/EC on the placing of pyrotechnic articles on the market.
