Abstract

EN 50264-2-1 specifies requirements for, and constructions and dimensions of, single core cables of the following types and voltage ratings: • 0,6/1 kV unscreened, unsheathed (1 mm² to 400 mm²); • 1,8/3 kV unscreened, unsheathed (1,5 mm² to 400 mm²); • 1,8/3 kV unscreened, sheathed (1,5 mm² to 400 mm²); • 3,6/6 kV unscreened, sheathed (2,5 mm² to 400 mm²). All cables have class 5 tinned copper conductors to EN 60228, halogen-free insulation and halogen-free sheath. They are for use in railway rolling stock as fixed wiring, or wiring where limited flexing in operation is encountered. The requirements provide for a continuous conductor temperature not exceeding 90 °C and a maximum temperature for short circuit conditions of 200 °C based on a duration of 5 s. Under fire conditions the cables exhibit special performance characteristics in respect of maximum permissible flame propagation (flame spread) and maximum permissible emission of smoke and toxic gases. EN 50264-2-1 should be read in conjunction with Part 1 “General requirements”.

SIST EN 50264-2-1:2008 is the Slovenian adoption of EN 50264-2-1:2008, a European standard for railway rolling stock power and control cables with special fire performance. It specifies single core cables with crosslinked elastomeric insulation for fixed wiring, or wiring with limited flexing in operation, and sets their construction, dimensions, marking, tests and fire-related performance.

What does SIST EN 50264-2-1:2008 specify?

SIST EN 50264-2-1:2008 specifies single core railway cables in four voltage categories, with or without sheath, and with crosslinked elastomeric insulation. It also sets the cable sizes, conductor type, insulation and sheath materials, and the performance checks needed to show conformity.

The document is organized into:

  • Clause 1 - Scope
  • Clause 2 - Normative references
  • Clause 3 - Definitions
  • Clause 4 - Rated voltage
  • Clause 5 - Marking and identification
  • Clause 6 - Construction of cables
  • Clause 7 - Tests
  • Annex A - Code designation
AnnexWhat it covers
ACode designation for insulation and sheath compounds, plus the additional code letter for a metallic screen

The standard applies to cables for railway rolling stock, where the cable may be used as fixed wiring or in locations with limited flexing. In practice, that tells a designer or buyer what cable family is covered and what type of installation it is intended for.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 50264-2-1:2008?

SIST EN 50264-2-1:2008 defines the cable build-up, the permitted voltage ratings, the required materials, and the tests that confirm electrical, mechanical and fire performance. The most important requirements are grouped below by what they mean for production and acceptance.

Cable types, voltages and sizes

Clause 1 limits the document to four cable types: 0,6/1 kV unscreened unsheathed, 1,8/3 kV unscreened unsheathed, 1,8/3 kV unscreened sheathed, and 3,6/6 kV unscreened sheathed. Clause 4 repeats the rated voltages for unsheathed and sheathed constructions. For users, this means the standard is not a general railway cable standard - it is focused on single core cables in these defined voltage families.

The scope also fixes the conductor range for each family. The tables then give the corresponding nominal cross-sectional areas, insulation thicknesses, overall diameters and electrical values. For procurement and design, those tables are the basis for selecting the right size and checking that the delivered cable matches the declared type.

Materials and construction

Clause 6 requires class 5 tin-coated annealed copper conductors to EN 60228. It also requires a minimum wire elongation when tested to EN 10002-1, which helps confirm that the conductor is sufficiently ductile for cable manufacture and railway use.

The insulation system must use extruded materials meeting EI 101 to EI 105, and the sheath, where present, must use EM 101 to EM 104. The document links each code to a resistance profile such as low temperature resistance, extra low temperature resistance, oil resistance, or extra oil and fuel resistance. In practice, this lets the purchaser specify cable performance by environment rather than by compound recipe.

For 3,6/6 kV cables, conductor screening is required. Separators are optional in the constructions covered by the part. Sheath and insulation thicknesses must match the values given in the relevant tables, so production control has a dimensional target, not just a material target.

Marking and identification

Clause 5 requires the cable marking to include the manufacturer’s name, the EN reference, the voltage rating, conductor size and the code designation from Annex A. Core insulation is normally black unless another colour is specified, and any other colour must follow HD 308. The sheath is also normally black unless otherwise specified.

For users, this matters because the marking and colour rules support traceability, installation checks and later maintenance. Clause 5 also requires the colour to be durable and visually identifiable, so the cable remains identifiable after handling and service.

Electrical, mechanical and fire tests

Clause 7 sets the verification program. It covers conductor resistance, voltage test, insulation resistance, dielectric strength, spark test, d.c. stability, surface resistance, ageing, hot set, compatibility, water absorption, ozone resistance, mineral oil resistance, fuel resistance, acid and alkali resistance, low-temperature bending or elongation, impact at low temperature, and reaction to fire.

The test schedule in Table 5 shows which tests are type, sample or routine tests. That is practical for manufacturers and approval bodies because it separates design validation from batch control and ongoing production checks.

The fire-related part is especially important for railway use. Clause 7.20 requires the complete cable to meet the reaction-to-fire requirements in EN 50264-1, and Clause 7.21 applies similar requirements to insulation, sheath and, where relevant, conductor screening and tapes. Table 5 also links the cable to flame spread and smoke emission test methods. For buyers and safety teams, that is the part that shows the cable family is intended for railway rolling stock with special fire performance.

What terms does SIST EN 50264-2-1:2008 define?

SIST EN 50264-2-1:2008 uses the definitions from EN 50264-1, and several terms are central to reading the part.

  • Rated voltage - the nominal voltage level assigned to a cable type, used to select the correct construction and test voltage.
  • Conductor screening - a screened layer used on the 3,6/6 kV construction to control electrical performance around the conductor.
  • Separator - an optional layer placed over the conductor or between insulation and sheath to assist construction.
  • Type (T) test - a verification test used to qualify the cable design or construction.
  • Sample (S) test - a test applied to selected samples, often for approval or batch checking.
  • Routine (R) test - a production test applied to manufactured cable items.
  • EI 101 to EI 105 - insulation system codes that identify the required resistance profile of the insulation.
  • EM 101 to EM 104 - sheath compound codes that identify the required resistance profile of the sheath.

Who uses SIST EN 50264-2-1:2008?

SIST EN 50264-2-1:2008 is used by cable manufacturers, railway rolling stock designers, test laboratories, quality teams and buyers who specify cabling for railway vehicles. Manufacturers use it to choose materials, build the cable and mark it correctly. Test labs use it to run the electrical, mechanical and fire tests in Clause 7 and Table 5. Buyers and quality managers use it to check that a cable offered for railway use matches the intended voltage, size, construction and special fire performance.

What changed in SIST EN 50264-2-1:2008 from the previous edition?

SIST EN 50264-2-1:2008 states that it supersedes EN 50264-2:2002 and replaces SIST EN 50264-2:2003.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 50264-2-1:2008?

What does the SIST EN 50264-2-1:2008 document contain?

SIST EN 50264-2-1:2008 contains four data tables for the cable families, a detailed construction clause, and a test clause that links each requirement to a method. Table 1 to Table 4 give the dimensional and electrical data for the four cable types. Table 5 gives the test schedule and shows which tests apply to type, sample and routine control.

It also contains the cable marking format, the code designation system in Annex A, and the references needed to read the part together with EN 50264-1. For engineering work, that means the document supports cable selection, product design, conformity testing and acceptance checks for railway rolling stock cabling.

Introduction
The EN 50264 series covers a range of cables, based upon halogen free materials, for use in railway rolling
stock. It is divided into 5 parts under the generic title “Railway applications - Railway rolling stock power and
control cables having special fire performance”:
– Part 1 General requirements;
– Part 2-1 Cables with crosslinked elastomeric insulation – Single core cables;
– Part 2-2 Cables with crosslinked elastomeric insulation – Multicore cables;
– Part 3-1 Cables with crosslinked elastomeric insulation with reduced dimensions – Single core
cables;
– Part 3-2 Cables with crosslinked elastomeric insulation with reduced dimensions – Multicore cables.
Information regarding selection and installation of cables, including current ratings can be found in EN 50355
and EN 50343. The procedure for selection of cable cross-sectional area, including reduction factors for
ambient temperature and installation type, is described in EN 50343.
Special test methods referred to in EN 50264 are given in EN 50305.
The cables in EN 50264-2-1 may also be used in EN 50264-2-2 to build up multicore sheathed cables.
Part 1, “General requirements”, contains a more extensive introduction to EN 50264, and should be read in
conjunction with this Part 2-1.

1 Scope
EN 50264-2-1 specifies requirements for, and constructions and dimensions of, single core cables of the
following types and voltage ratings:
• 0,6/1 kV unscreened, unsheathed (1 mm² to 400 mm²);
• 1,8/3 kV unscreened, unsheathed (1,5 mm² to 400 mm²);
• 1,8/3 kV unscreened, sheathed (1,5 mm² to 400 mm²);
• 3,6/6 kV unscreened, sheathed (2,5 mm² to 400 mm²).
All cables have class 5 tinned copper conductors to EN 60228, halogen-free insulation and halogen-free
sheath. They are for use in railway rolling stock as fixed wiring, or wiring where limited flexing in operation is
encountered. The requirements provide for a continuous conductor temperature not exceeding 90 °C and a
maximum temperature for short circuit conditions of 200 °C based on a duration of 5 s.
Under fire conditions the cables exhibit special performance characteristics in respect of maximum
permissible flame propagation (flame spread) and maximum permissible emission of smoke and toxic gases.
EN 50264-2-1 should be read in conjunction with Part 1 “General requirements”.

NOTE It is not necessary to test every individual wire. 5 % of wires or 10 wires, whichever is the least number, should be selected at
random.
6.3 Conductor screening
For cables in Table 4 conductor screening shall be as given in EN 50264-1, 6.1.6.
6.4 Separator
6.4.1 A separator may be used over the conductor if the cable construction does not include a conductor
screen.
6.4.2 A separator may be included between the insulation and the sheath.
6.5 Insulation system
The insulation shall be one or more extruded materials as defined in EN 50264-1 applied so as to meet the
requirements of EI 101 to EI 105.
