This document specifies the composition of the base steel used for the production of tinplate for use in direct contact with foodstuffs or products for human and animal consumption as well as the composition of tin used to coat it. Tinplate can be produced with or without an organic coating.

-   packaging of dry foods,
-   aerosol cans.
The material is chosen in accordance with the conditions for its use.

Dieses Dokument legt die Zusammensetzung von Stahl für die Produktion von Weißblech für die Verwendung in direkter Berührung mit Nahrungsmitteln oder Produkten für den menschlichen und tierischen Verzehr als auch die Zusammensetzung von Zinn für den Stahlüberzug fest. Le fer blanc peut être produit avec ou sans revêtement organique.

EN 10333:2024 - Steel for packaging - Tin coated steel (tinplate) - is a CEN standard that defines the metal composition, coating requirements and test methods for flat steel products intended to be in direct contact with foodstuffs, beverages and products for human and animal consumption. It applies to tinplate used in common packaging formats such as drinks and food cans, dry-food packaging and aerosol cans. The standard clarifies material selection, marking and conformity checks to ensure safe, consistent steel for packaging and food contact performance.

Key topics and technical requirements

• Base metal composition: Maximum element limits are specified for key alloying and residual elements (examples: C ≤ 0.30 %, Mn ≤ 2.50 %, Si ≤ 1.0 %, Al ≤ 1.0 %). Strict limits apply to toxic trace elements - Cd, Pb and Hg - consistent with packaging directives (Cd+Pb+Hg ≤ 0.0100 %; individual limits also given).
• Tin coating: Tin used must satisfy EN 610 for grade Sn99.85, with a Pb content ≤ 0.010 % in the tin ingot and in the finished coating.
• Coating options: Tinplate may be produced with or without an organic coating (lacquer), and products are normally delivered with a food‑contact‑suitable oil unless otherwise specified.
• Passivation and oiling: Surface treatments and oiling follow the requirements of EN 10202:2022 to improve corrosion resistance and lacquering/printing performance.
• Testing and verification: Annex A defines the reference lead determination method: electrochemical stripping of the tin layer followed by ICP‑MS analysis of the electrolyte. Method effective range and reproducibility (0.5–20.0 g/m²; reproducibility ~0.1 g/m²) are specified. Dimensional tolerances and other checks reference EN 10202:2022.
• Marking & traceability: Each coil or bundle must be labelled with the EN 10333 reference, manufacturer name/trademark and batch identification.

4 Information to be provided by the purchaser
The information, which shall be provided by the purchaser at the time of enquiry and order, shall satisfy
the requirements of EN 10202:2022.
NOTE Furthermore, the purchaser can specify the type of oil suitable for food contact to be used when the
product is delivered oiled.
5 Dimensions and dimensional tolerances
The nominal dimensions shall be agreed at the time of enquiry and order.
Dimensional tolerances shall meet the requirements of EN 10202:2022, Clause 9.
6 Requirements
6.1 Base metal
The composition of the base metal shall meet the requirements of Table 1.
NOTE This table is identical in EN 10333, EN 10334 and EN 10335.
